I'm trying to remove my glow plugs to replace them and I am having trouble getting the 10mm socket out after I loosen them up. My ? is do you need to remove the rocker arm to get these things out normally? I've got the valve cover off of the passenger side and all of them are testing bad is this common? My starting problem just started all of the sudden it wasn't a gradual problem, not sure what would cause them to all burn out at once.
Thanks in advance for your help.
you did check the relay didn't you? what year is the truck, what exactly is the problem? what mods are there. if you check the glow plug for continuity to ground you can tell that they are bad.
No I didn't check the relay, but all of them are checking bad with a test light. I even hooked them up to the battery when I got them out and they wouldn't get warm at all.
No mods on the truck, it's what I use to pull my race car.
The problem I was having is it wouldn't start even in 55 degree weather and when it did it smoked like crazy. It would start fine if I plugged it in for a few hours.
make sure that when you test the gp that you ground it to the right spot. the relay can fail open (likely) or closed (unlikely). make sure the relay is grounded properly, before you try power to it check for continuity between the two big lugs. there should be none. now hit one of the small lugs with power and listen for a click. check for continuity, it should be there. double and tripple check the relay to make sure that its good/bad. if the relay went closed it should have killed your batts. also the wiring where it goes through the valve cover can cause problems, so check those wires as well. the feed for the gp relay is at the starter relay, check that wire (area) to. don't forget to check the fuses for the gp system. when you cycle the key is the small wire to the gp relay getting power? i've just never heard of all gp's failing at once. but maybe that is what has happened. just interesded, when was the last oil change before the problem showed up?
After checking all the gp the four on the passenger side were bad and the four on the drivers side were good. I have changed the bad ones and just have to put the valve covers back on. Gotta go eat first. I will check the relay as you've instructed before I try to start it, just where is it located.
There is a bracket above the passengers side valve cover with either one or two solenoids that look like Ford starter relays. If you have one, it is the glow plug relay. If you have two, it is the smaller one that is not rubber mounted.
Snap On makes a 10 mm short deep well socket that when used with a 1/4 inch drive wobble extension brings those glow plugs right out without taking the rocker arms off.
Thanks Joe, I managed to get them out and back in this time without taking the rocker arms off but it took a while, i'll get that socket before i try it again. My truck has one mounted to the passenger fender well and one over the valve cover it checked ok though. The truck fired right up after I got it all back together.
