I just picked up an 2002 F150 FX4 to replace my 2000 ranger 4wd that got wrecked back in the winter. The ranger had issues with the pulse vacuum hubs several times so I paranoid.
The F150 has push button 4wd and vacuum hubs. I have noticed that the front wheels chatter during low speed turns as if the 4wd is not disengaged. It could be the tires which are Good Year Wrangler AT/S. The 4wd engages (can hear it actuate) in 4H and 4L. I jacked up the front end and noticed that the front axles will not turn independent of the front wheels in 2wd. Is this normal or is something not disengaging? Each axle/wheel will spin independently.
Thanks for the help. I miss manual hubs and floor shifters.
there is an electric motor on the transmission that engages the front drive shaft. there is a vacuum cylinder on the front differential that engages the front axle shafts. If the vacuum cylinder is stuck "on" the axles will be tied to the drive shaft and might drag together.. you should be ablel to turn each wheel independantly when 1 is off the ground. if you are doing a low speed sharp turn, yes the big tires will drag, but not as bad as if it was in 4 x 4. If it acts like a plow, then your in 4 x 4
Sounds like everything is working correctly then. The wheels will turn independently. I was expecting to be able to turn the axle by hand with the truck in 2wd with the wheels on the ground. But that does not seem to be the way this system is designed to work.
