Running Hot

Ok, here is the problem. Currently on camping trip with our 31' 5th wheel 10-11000lbs, its a 2006 F350 4x4 King Ranch. The truck seems to run hot. The temperatures here are in the high 60's low 70's, and I'm seeing ECT temps of around 200-225 degrees. Delta between EOT and ECT is well within spec, with ECT actually exceeding EOT on gradual climbs. Fan kicks into high at 210 as normal but isn't very fast at bringing the temps down again. On level ground, the temp can fluctuate between 205 - 212 and increases quickly when there is any kind of grade to climb. I've flushed the cooling system about a month ago and the front cover, water pump and thermostat were replaced about 20000 miles ago. As there appears to be no problem with coolant loss, EOT vs EGT, is it possible for the radiator to be plugged internally? I've checked the fins and they are clear. Now here is the real kicker, when I use the tow tune on my Edge Evolution, the truck does a lot better than in stock form. When running stock, the temps go up very quick and EGT's get into the 1100 degree range. Any suggestion?

What makes you think those temperatures are high for that load at 70F ambient? What's the frontal area of that 5th wheel?

Sorry, quick add on. Can a stuck open or faulty EGR valve cause this? It's been cleaned on a regular basis, last time about a month ago. I do believe that the Edge limits EGR operation.

I've pulled this trailer for two years, up and down the same basically flat stretch of highway between Edmonton and Calgary. I've never seen her that hot. Hate to see what the temps would be when ambient is in the 80's.

Anyone know how much EGR raises the temps?

Honestly I don't see any problems with those temperatures. If you had a stuck open EGR valve you'd get a check engine light or a least a code. What temp does the truck run unloaded?

Fan goes to "high" at 210? hmmm, mine doesn't kick into roar until 218. Then it drops my temps very quickly.

Unloaded she runs around 195-200 ECT. EOT is about 7 degrees more. No pucking, no white exhaust smoke or smell. In stop and go city driving she can hit 210 on the ECT, but I attribute that more to the traffic and the automatic climate controls which turns on the AC basically all the time.

No studs, no coolant loss or white residue. If it were the head gasket, then running tuned it would increase more rapidly. It just seems to me like there isn't enough flow through the cooling system or that running stock, the EGR is heating things up too much.

You are OK the t/stat start to open at 192.2 and is fully open at 219.2 i pull a 14k 5er and i have see ECT 218* EOT 228* pulling a 6% grade at +90* my fan comes on around 214*, if you are still running the Ford Gold coolant it will plug your coolers in time, it can't take the heat the silicates drop out first stop oil cooler.

I don't think anyone has proven this. There are many folks running Ford Gold w/ 200k miles and no issues. That being said, folks that switched to the ELC coolant seem to not experience the oil cooler plugging (coolant solids). Mohle - If you do have the Ford Gold coolant, flush it every 40k-50k miles. A coolant filter is highly recommended. Mine has removed a lot of casting sand. If diluting the Ford Gold concentrate, do so with distilled water ... and stay at a 50/50 mix (no higher). There is some evidence that exposure to low pH combustion gasses (head gasket leaks) can initiate some solids "drop out". Be sure to watch ECT's (coolant temps) closely and keep them as low as possible (in the normal range)

BTW - w/ a good functioning coolant system (good water pump, clean radiator fins, no solids in the coolant system), the EGR system is not adding too much heat for proper temperatures to be achieved.

One thing I havent' seen is the speed you're pulling at. If you're trying to maintain 45-55 or low RPM's that could impact your temps dramatically also.

Ok, back home now. Haven't found the problem but something is up. Towed an alternate route home. The beginning of the alternate home stretch had some 12% grades, more hills hills and into a headwind. Then met up with the same flat stretch for the rest of the way home. ECT never went above 215 and EOT never went over 220. Also found that keeping her above 62 mph (100 km) made her way happier. Now I know that's a pretty good speed, but tranny temps also never exceeded 178. Even on the grades, which I took nice and slow. This contradicts everything on the way down there. Ambient temps were within a few degrees, virtually no wind and a much flatter stretch of road.

Thanks for the note Bismic. I changed over to CAT coolant last fall.
