That's about as good a recommendation as we can get for using the services of a quality, local rebuilder, and to continue using the Mitsubishi-designed starter.

Thanks for the experienced input! Some reps are deserved!

So what are the signs of a starter that is starting to go? Mine starts the truck but it is not super fast turning like you hear in some of the videos online and such. Come to think of it, sometimes my engine needs between1 and 2 seconds of cranking before it turns over.

This reminded me of a video I saw a while back. My starter sounds close to the first example, and nowhere near as fast as the one 45 seconds into the clip. I was hoping when I got 2 new Interstate batteries it would speed up the starting but it didn't (one battery was undersized and one battery was dead when I bought the truck).

I watched ol' Bill's diatribe up until he called the Mitsubishi starter "direct drive".

That's the clue he hasn't one!

Good Ol' Blowhard Bill............. sheesh.

Why do we even discuss him here any more?

Pop,

You gave me a good laugh! Don't get me wrong, I'm not bowing at the powerstrokehelp altar, just using that as an example to compare the speed of the 2 starters. I really am wondering if my starter may need to be serviced in the near future. I like taking care of issues before they become problems.

Thanks for remembering. I am so grateful that my own costly mistake has helped someone else avoid the same end (or potentially much worse)!

That attitude will save you a lot of grief and frustration in the long run!

JP, that's how my starter was acting before it died. Slow-cranking, thought it was my batteries. Had them tested and the batteries passed. 2 months later still slow - cranking she finally "DIED" !! Thanks everyone some good input here

All of my starter failures were abrupt. Hit key and nothing happened. I may have noticed it slowing down if I had something to compare it to - but I only noticed new starter was FAST!!

Big Poppa, can I ask who you are planning on using (assuming we are allowed to post it)? I'm not too far from your area and get out there on a semi regular basis. Would like to use someone who has a good reputation. If we can't post it, do you mind messaging me?

Thanks,

JP

My pleasure JP, here it is http://www.merchantcircle.com/business/CHESTNUT.HILL.AUTO.ELECTRIC.717-445-4516

They don't have a web-site per say but all the locals around here, including shops send them their electrical equipment. For a complete rebuild of my Alternator, using mine it was 134.00 with a year warranty. They use quality parts so thats a big plus.. Although I had an alternator rebuild, not a starter this is what they replaced just to give you an idea, this part was copied and pasted from my thread.. Heres what they did and their findings and the prices charged so you guys will know what to expect if you went for a rebuild OF A Ford G6. #1 Stator PN#114000BX $26.01----#2 Rectifier PN#FR6033 $17.19----#3 Regulator PN#100-060 $22.41----#4 Housing PN#22-215 $4.68----#5 Nut PN#85-2301 $.11 CENTS---- #6 Bearing PN# 6303 $3.06----#7 Bearing PN#10-1051-4 $5.13----#8 Tolerance Ring PN#46-2505 .25 CENTS----#9 Slip Ring F6G PN#AE815 $3.22 #10 1.25 hours of labor $45.00 and 7.62 for tax your looking at a 134.68.

No, what is PICTURED is an Off-Set Gear Reduction (OSGR) type starter. It is the basic NipponDenso design.

What is described with part numbers is a Mitsubishi, however.

I'd make real sure of what they were selling before buying that offer.

The Mitsubishi design uses a planetary set for gear reduction (PLGR), and thus appears as a "straight-through" or (to use Good Ol' Howlin-Wolf Bill's mistaken term) "direct-drive". It looks more like this one:
M8T50072 Mitsubishi Gear Reduction Starter for Ford Diesel FORD TRUCKS 7.3L

Also, be aware that there are TWO Mitsu starters. The regular one, P/N M8T50071, which is OEM Ford, and then there's a 3.6KW unit, P/N M8T50072.

NipponDenso has two mounting bolts, the Mitsubishi has three. You can use the Mitsu starters to replace the OSGR ones from 2001-2003, as well.

Great way to find a good rebuilder in your area is to ask your nearest forklift repair company as they live and die by good quality rebuilt parts

Thanks Big Poppa! That's an easy stop for me. I'm think'n I'll contact them ahead of time so they can get all the necessary parts and then swing out with the starter. The other option would be to ship it to them so there's no "oops, we need a ______" and it won't be done til Monday and have to drive back out. Yea, I like that better.

Thanks again!

JP
