Hey guys.
Is it normal that the coil and voltage regulator get hot before the engine???
also would this make my truck stall???
I just replaced the coil, the old one was really dry and the new one was full of oil.
I just pi$$es me off that these trucks spend more time broken down that on the road.
I had my friend tow me home with his exploder for the 1000th time and a CA highway patrol stopped by and asked me if we were "dumping" the car(we were in the middle of the desert since i didnt want the truck to die in the middle of the bridge).
I said :"I should dump it here but I cant I love ti too much.
I should been a stamp collector, its a lot easier and prolly cheaper.
Yes, at least the coil heating up has been known to cause vehicles to stall. To my knowledge the only fix is isolating the coil. As for heating up, I'd thing "maybe", and I mean maybe, but I really don't know.
I think the coil and ballast resistor (I was mistaking it for the voltage reg) were getting hot because I was trying to start the motor with out succes.
I installed a new mechanical pump and I re routed the fuel line away from the engine,so far it works so lets hope that fixes it.
The resistor will get hot enough in normal operation to cause fires - make sure it's mounted on metal away from anything combustible. The coil will be warm, but not hot.
New coils can be junk out of the box. See if it will start and run consistently with the old one. Find one made in the USA for starters. Overseas electronics are notable for high failure rates at this point in time.
Every proper repair makes your truck more dependable. My 48's first year back on the road was one long shake-down cruise. After that it became the most dependable truck I have. Patience. You'll get there.
