I sure need a little advice on how to remove the oil pan on my 1965. I recently purchased this truck and it has a 352 and over the years the pan drain hole threads have been stripped. Do the self tapping plugs I've heard about work. Gasket is also leaking a little.....the pan should be removed and the job done right, but I have never done this job on a Ford. Can someone please tell me what I am up against. Also I just can't seem to get the search function on the board to work, what am I doing wrong.
Thanks for any advice.
Hey Rich:
Welcome aboard! The times that I have done this in the vehicle usually all require the same work, just a little different. Unsually, start by unbolting the motor mounts, place a set of blocks under the lower (crank) pulley and this will allow you to jack the engine up to remove the pan. Use common sence and watch for the hoses/wiring so they don't over extend and something gives. Shoule be able to pull this off. Might need/be best to put blocks under the motor at the mounts rather than depending that the jack won't be in the way when you attempt to remove the pan.
Good luck!
Try this first. go to your local parts house, and get a new STANDARD size drain plug. should be 1/2 inch. and see if it will screw in and be tight. On most Ford oil pans, they used a hardened metal tab inside the oil pan, and a soft drain plug, so the plug would strip, and not the pan. When people decide they need to install a oversize drain plug, they crack the hardened tab inside the pan, and then, they have to pull the pan. May try running a tap in the pan before installing the new plug...just my two cents..
