frame swap on 64

hey
You guys have been talking about swapping frames to gain power steering and discs up front on 65-6 half tons. I was wondering if the same swap can be done to my 64 for the same reasons along with gaining the twin i beam setup. Do the cab mounts work with my 64 cab? Are the rails themselves the same? last time i measured, the frame itself in front of the cab seemed the same soooo can a guy drill out the rivets holding the cab mounts on and just drill and bolt them on to a newer frame. This would seem easier but i'm probably overlooking something. Or maybe could i drill out the rivets that hold the spring mounts ect on the newer frame and drill and bolt them to the frame i have now. Its a short box also if that makes a difference. Any help is appreciated.

Your right on just about all points as far as I know.
I believe you will have less problems if you swap the cab mounts and move the sheet stock over to the newer frame.

frame swap on 64

roo,

I did the same thing for the same reasons on my 55. I'm not finished but the cab is back up on the 'new' frame (69 f-100 with spindles from a 75) and I have power steering/power disc brakes and the Twin-I-Beam suspension.

Both the old and new frame was 34" wide, front to rear (not sure about yours). The front cab mount was fabricated to fit the new frame, you may be able to see them in my gallery. The new frame is not 'flat' as the old one was, so careful measurements was necessary to keep everything level.

The steering column on my 55 was a major modification because the shaft goes throught the floor in a different place than the stock 55, again I'm not sure how yours will be.

Good Luck

Thanks guys.
good info and pics. you answered my next question as to wether the longbox frame can be shortened to work on my shortbox. what all was involved to shorten it and was it hard to get everything lined up before welding. its flat out easy to find a long box donor. my setup would be very similar to yours except i'm thinking about 351 and not sure about aod or c-4. is your tranny column shifted or floor. and what all was involved in relocating the column and related modifications. would the column from the donor truck work or did you use the 55. i'm looking for column shift and tilt if possible but don't really care for the looks of the gm column. thanks again

All true and if you move up a couple of years 73-79 you get the tank out back where it belongs. I was looking at an 85 the other day, sure looks like the old sheet metal would fit on these frames as well. I recently saw a unibody on a 82-? 4x4 frame, Beautiful, looked bone stock except for the late model rear bumper.

Yeah i considered the 73-79 frame but i am looking to fit a healthy sized tire under the rear and the frames get wider after the cabs in those years (someone correct me if i'm wrong) and make it harder to do so. thanks anyhoo

ps i have a 68 mustang tank sitting in the attic that should work perfect. again great info from knowledgable people.
