Hey fellow 6.0L fans!! I am that guy that doesn't come on here much, but comes on here to keep encouraging. I just passed 290K yesterday. This is not only freeway miles, but alot of trailer pulling miles as well. I'll be to the 300K mark soon. I still have the oringinal automatic transmission too! I have religiousely changed my tranny fluid every 60K and have been using Amsoil Universal ATF. I have been using Rotella T 5W-40 since the truck had 61K. You oil lovers are going to hate me......but, I did oil changes at 20K and oil filter every 5K for 180K!! One of the Ford mechanics that I know gave me such a hard time for doing this, I went to 10K oil changes with the 5K oil filter change remaining the same. Keep trucking!!! : ) Oh, it's a 2003 F-350, noticed I don't have the truck mentioned in my signature. The mods listed are for the '02 Excursion, the 6.0L is 100% stock.

Reason: forgot to mention
Glad you have done well, but to encourage people to go 20k miles on an oil change is somewhat irresponsible IMO. Hopefully it isn't an Amsoil commercial developing!
As to whether or not these engines are "fragile", just spend some time reading up on (the many) stiction and injector problems (and how much the repairs have cost) - then make up your own mind. There are more than a few of these posts. All about "risk vs rewards" decisions ............
I tend to see great value in the conservative recommendations, rather than the live-on-the-edge recommendations.
Congrats on your success. The farthest I went on my 6.0 was a 15K mile oil change. I always tested my oil to determine when to change it. My normal interval was 10K to 12K.
There are so many variables that impact engine oil life that it is difficult to set a prescribed miles change interval that is good for all. Naturally, the lower the change interval the more varied driving and maintenance styles will be covered. I also used a bypass filter that gave me an extra two quarts of oil.
20k is a lot of miles on an oil change plus if half of them are pulling that even adds to the problem i run Amsoil and a by-pass and my max is 5k just for this reason http://www.alliantpower.com/pdf/APTB-0109-watermark.pdf but mine pulls a 14k 5er about 100% of the time.
Post when you hit 300k
pop
At $5-8k for injectors & whatever else goes I'm sticking with 5k oil changes.
Still comes out watery & black so to go further seems folly.
The 'anti wear' goop they ad is affected by heat and from combustion getting by rings.
My truck does mostly short trips anyway; i can see a unit that runs on the highway under liker loads pushing to 8k.
I was doing the 20K oil change intervals because I was driving 5-8K miles a month for a couple years, not sure what the percentage of trailer/no trailers miles those were, but I was working it 7 days a week. AND NO, this is not another Amsoil commercial nor am I encouraging anyone to do what I did. I just felt compelled to do so for how fast I was piling the miles up. This thread was started to simply tell all you 6.0L owners to keep your chins up as the public seems to bad mouth the 6.0L. I'll let you guys know when I pass the mark!
To ljutic ss: I never did get an oil analysis done. I should have done that......I could do another oil change at 20K and have it sent in.......don't know if I could bring myself to do those intervals again, I just don't drive enough since the economy has tanked. I am doing 3-4K miles a month on average, some months more, but I'll stick to the 10K oil change and the 5K oil filter interval for now. : )
Thanks for the positive input Mc. It's nice to hear the good stories. Any major maintenance performed (i.e., turbo, cooler, head gaskets, FICM, etc) during this time frame?
^Since I aquired this truck at 61K from my father in law (it is still owned by him, it is my company truck, but drive it as my personal truck as well), the turbo failed at 92K, the head gaskets failed at 132K, radiator failed at 268K, and have only (2) of the original injectors left. As for the injectors, seemed like when we hit 200K, we were replacing a couple every 10K or so. Rear end diff was rebuilt at 180K, we replaced the rear axles seals at that time too. We completely rebuild the front end suspension every 100K. (we have an in house mechanic) I am on my third set of batteries.........what is original??: automatic tranny, alternator, water pump, front diff, transfer case is OE, I could go on, but figured most people wanted to know what parts that get changed more frequently.
