Need second opinion

F-250 6.0, Ford states the truck has three oil leaks. Rear main, oil cooler, base plate. Ford states cost over $3000 to repair. 20 hours at $125 per hour.

Another mechanic says he can do it for near $2000.

What makes sense? The right way to do this work is pull the cab and pull the engine, right? Any secrets out there that mechanics might do do to keep the labor down?

make dang sure it isnt the rear main.... failed ICP sensors appear to look like rear main leaks/bedplate leaks.

I would get some engine dye and clean it then drive it. find out for dang sure where it is coming from and not where it is now.

Oil cooler cover leak isnt bad....if icp problem then change both at the same time....8-10hrs work....

just my .00000002 cents (deflation)

The dealership is paying for the repair. This all came about that I was told by the dealer that all oil leaks were repaired. Turns out, after I drove the truck and did some investigation, only the front seal was done. They probably thought that would take care of most of the leaking, but the tech said that once the front seal was replaced, the truck was able to build up pressure and then it showed up in other places, the rear main, base plate and oil cooler seal. These leaks were deteremined by the dye testing. ( Does that even make sense?_)
I am now skeptical about this truck, it's a 03 with 159,000. But I believe that with all the work they are about to do, it should be better than new.
It appears not to have been abused. It's clean.

What do you think? Better to have a freshly regasket truck than one where you don't know when the next leak will begin.

Thanks,
T

I'd let the dealer fix it and unload it ASAP. Expect more problems down the road. Avoid the 6.0l trucks on your next truck purchase. My $.02.

If the engine is going to be out and you plan to keep it, I would do an EGR delete (if you can), head studs, machine heads, and a new oil cooler. The expensive part is pretty much free, just need to supply parts.

If you need EGR, than go with a bulletproof model to ensure no failures. The 6.0 can be made reliable with some mods and since the dealer is already gonna have that motor out of the truck, get the other mods done!

I happen to be very happy with my 6.0. Granted they do require pro-active maint. That being said, knock on wood, it has never let me down. I know a guy that has had ****ty luck with his but his maint. plan is re-active. He purchased a coolant filter kit over a year ago and it's still sitting on his work bench.

See that doesn't make any sense.

There are tons and tons of people out there who love their 6.0s

Even after the problems they have with them, hell I still love mine after the few problems it had.

I don't care if you buy a duramax, powerstroke, or cummins with 1mile or 500,000 miles it's going to eventually have problems.

I know a guy who owns a duramax w/ an Allison transmission, stock motor no tunes or anything it blew(real bullet proof) also I know many people with duramaxs who say they will NEVER own one due to their problems, injectors, quite a few head gaskets.

Dont even start with the cummins.
