Yesterday I towed this unit to the scales about 40mi round trip. Most of it hiway driving. My ect was 215 -220 and eot 215 -228. Outside temp was 98. Most of my up comming trip will be flat land country and some hill country. At the scales i weight in at 10300 empty and loaded i will have an extra 2k or so.

I hit 220 just about every time I tow, on moderate hills. And I'm only pulling 9k#. Big hills can go higher than that. But the fan knocks it down pretty fast.

I think I have a t-stat that is on the tight side compared to some. I often see 200 empty around town.

Do you have the egr. valve plugged in.? It can mess with the fan operation if unplugged. Just a thought.

Mine is unplugged and I had no issue with the fan not engaging.

It was one of our resident techs (Cheesit) that posted his finding of how the egr not being plugged in seemed to cause a different (less efficient) cycle of the fan operation. Try doing a search. I seem to recall that he mentioned it was on certain model years, but not sure. Try doing a search and read through his thread. If I find time and get a chance I'll see if I can find it and post a link.

I got my AE going and tested the fan. When I set fan speed to 100% there is a delay of about 1min and then it comes on, then when I reset to 0% there is a delay of about 1min befor it responds. Good news is that the fan is working. I am still concerned about it running 220* on a flat road pulling 11k. I think I am going to change the T stat and see what happens.

when I had my egr valve unplugged my fan would work too but it was all or nothing
nothing in the middle range

the fan is duty cycle controled IIRC

op hav reported these findings as they monitor with a AE as well

The fan operation with the eye unplugged wont go to 100% duty cycle. If I remember right anyways. Cheezit said he has only tested this on his truck. So it might just apply to certin my/strategies.

Towed my 14k 5er this weekend for the first time this year ECT was 205-210, EOT was 208-212. TFT 175-185. 70f ambient. I never heard my fan come on even seeing 220+ pulling hills. Highest EGT i saw was 1100. truck did great and am really happy with it.

Now wondering if you guys recommend a tow tune for this much weight. I have a Elite "heavy tow" but im afraid to use it because i find quite high temps towing light 5000lbs. Not sure im happy with it. I do love their Insanity tune unloaded though!

Try another heavy tow tune or keep er stock towing 5er??

I JUST got back from a 4 day trip to Yosemite, towing my 23' travel trailer (6500lbs). There were some steep grades in excess of 8%. My highest temps after pulling grade for several miles were:

Outside temp was 82*

ECT: 212*
EOT: 229*
TFT: 184*
EGT: 1108*

The Ford acronym is TFT. I have no idea what AE calls it.

Towed 8K 1,500 miles. Normal ECT was 205-219, with EOT ranging between 210-229 (obviously, temps depended upon load, flatter terrain saw the lower numbers). Was VERY pleased with the Scan Gauge 2 and the ability to have that data at a glance. Turbo would consistently build to 20psi (factory gauge) and averaged 9-12 mpg depending upon the terrain (everything from Smokey Mountains to plains of Texas). Braking downhill was easy, going up the steep grades we kept it at 45mph and it was great. Could have gone faster but no need to push it. The fan would not let the ECT go a degree above 219, or the EOT a degree above 229.

Outside air temps were hovering around 100F, with the mornings around 85F where the lower temps were seen. Intake air according to SG2 was between 100-110F.
