okayy gotta 312y in the truck that came with a gm 1 wire alternator. well it burnt out about 2 weeks ago so i bought a remand one. no bigs. put a brandnew battery on it...(but its just a small cheap car battery from tha local wally world. now it started up fine for about 2 weeks and now it wont even attempt to click over every-time i try to start the truck back up. it doesn't matter if i shut it off and instantly try to start it back up. i just put electric fans on the truck (2) 12 inch. and when i shut the truck off depending how hot it is down in Savannah GA, it runs for about 10 minutes. do you guys think that could be my problem? or maybe a voltage regulator maybe? i been battleing this charging system for about a month witht eh new fan settup, and a month before that with the mechanical fan set up also. thanks Fellow slickers for atleast reading this.
if the truck won't restart immediately after shutting it down, it sounds like the alternator isn't charging.
on some (most?) of those one-wire alts, you have to rev the engine up in order to trigger the charging process. up around 2000 rpm or so.
have you got a voltmeter to test with? if so, check voltage across the battery terminals while the truck is running. you're looking something in the 13-14 range, otherwise the alternator isn't charging.
i never understood why electric fans run while the engine is shut down, to begin with...if the engine is OFF, the water can't circulate, so what's the point in cooling the water down?

I am trying to understand this. Help me out. It starts fine when cold? Like after sitting over night? But will not even crank over when hot? If this is the case and jumping it don't help than I would look to a bad starter. Often a bad starter will work when cold but engine and manifold heat will cause it to crank slow or not at all. Does it try to crank when hot? Does the solenoid click?
yea, when its hot or cold i have to jump it or charge it enough to crank. otherwise its either click. or nothing.. should i wire my fans so that they dont run when the egine is off? mean the air it pushes while the motor off i guess could"cool" the hot block faster?
Like rustywheel said you need to check voltage across the battery with engine running and it should be 14-14.5 volts depending on the state of charge in the battery. If it's charging in that range, then maybe unhook the battery after fully charged and after overnight hook it back up and seen if it will start. May have a parasitic drain on the battery(something drawing current with everything off).

i wouldn't mess with the fans at this point- we need to pinpoint the issue before we add more variables into the equation.
word. i did a slow charge on it friday night thru saturday morning. and i go out there just a few minutes ago to get my mini mag light and my interior light wont come on its so dead. which leads me to think i have a draw happening somewhere.
