CCV system / RACOR advice
To begin with my 2003 7.3 excursion is down to a long block, I have had a small oil leak since I got it and a while back it finally puked oil on the valley, into the street. P.S. Nothing like "I'll get around to it" to come back and bite you in the ***.
So I tore it all down, HPOP, Turbo, Oil/Coolant cooler, etc. since I might as well replace all the o-rings and gaskets that I can while I am in there.
During teardown I noticed I had a loose boot (clamp was finger loose at the nut) on the passenger intake plenum and boy did that thing blow crap everywhere.
Anyhow, I will be replacing the boots, doing plenum inserts, etc. and I want to filter the CCV with a Racor unit, keeping it closed loop.
I've got a few questions for those that can help (not those who want to tell me i am wasting my $ by not running a hose to the back)
1) Is the CCV4500 going to provide enough margin at 10 cfm? My 7.3 has 145,000K (no real mods at this point) and I can't measure blow by at this point. I wouldn't mind doing the CCV6000, but the damn thing is huge and will hang 4" or so below the frame rail, the CCV4500 would tuck close to flush if I can hang it smartly.
2) I live in CA and I will need to put the original CCV back for inspections most likely. It looks to me like the factory CCV is just a bunch of SS media that should help intercept the mist/vapor and let it gravity drain back through the valve cover.
So...Since the new filter will be doing most of the work, would I cause any problems fabbing a new CCV box (or hollowing out a used one) with no internal media that would just route to the filter?
What are your thoughts and thanks?
