I recently purchased my 2011 F150, which is the first new vehicle I've ever owned. I have always changed my own oil, and if possible I would like to continue doing this myself. My only concern is any potential warranty claims down the road.
If I change my own oil can Ford blame any drivetrain failures on me?
What should I do to maintain records of my own maintenance to prove I've changed the oil regularly?
I am aware that I must use synthetic oil and a Motorcraft filter.
In addition to FLMOwner.com, you can use an iPhone app (if you have an iPod touch or iPhone) called Gas Cubby. It allows you to track maintenance, and fuel. It will give you MPG calculations and maintenance reminders.
I chose that app because it allows you to add your own custom services. For example I added "Transmission Fluid" and deleted "Spark Plugs."
Its really great. You can also sync it online (no online viewing however) so that you will always have a back up. Also, you can export it to your email in an Excel file.
Thanks for the advice, Charlie. Something like FLMOwner is exactly what I'm looking for, since it's operated by Ford and I've already got a username there. Great advice with photodocumenting also.
Trey, thanks for the advice but I am a software engineer and I despise Apple's business model and their products, so I have an Android phone not an iPhone. I will look into an alternative for Android because I like the idea.

I dont blame ya, Apple treats their developers/artists like the dirt under the foundation their HQ is built on.. But at the same time the iphone is clean and user friendly (even tho you cant do much with it.) I got my iPhone pre-Andriod, but I'm sure theres an Andriod equivalent.
You're welcome. I use the FLMOwner site to log all maintenance and Fuelly.com to log all gas usage (I have a free (from work) Windows Mobile phone). I also keep my own spreadsheet to log both maintenance and fuel.
I changed mine last weekent on my Ecoboost, kind of a poor design in IMO. Oil plug on side of pan lots of threads, getting to the filter is not that easy either way. I put the bigger filter on since I have 2 of them, it comes real close to the hoses. Then all the covers that seem really cheap and chinsy.

I have an app on android called fuel log. It keeps track of fuel(obviously), but you can also keep track of other stuff too like maintenance cost, ins, tolls, etc. I hope this helps some.

I agreee I looked at a 5.0 engine bay was about the cheapest looking of any new truck I have seen, complete with foam rubber pushed down over injectors for noise deadening, no engine cover what so ever to help keep it clean, very pathetic IMO!!
Not really true! All that matters is you must use a Ford Spec'd oil which meets 930a (older SM) or the newest 946a (SN newest) spec no where does it require the use of synthetic oil. Plenty of options open to you that have those specs but for price point and results MC 5w20 is a great oil.

Its a truck not a show poodle car.I don't care what mine looks like under the hood .It does everthing I want it to do and gets good mileage.Indy to Carisle Pa last week with lots of hills and mountains 22mpg.I had a 1000lbs in it also.550 miles and it said 342 till empty.Ford makes good trucks they don't have to dress them up .Let the other companys put lipstick on their pigs to sell them. http://s186.photobucket.com/albums/x...t=DCP_0780.jpg
