Question Harsh 4-5 Shift

Took my truck to a local dealer to investigate what I consider to be a harsh/hard 4-5 shift. All other shifts are firm but smooth. They were unable to duplicate the issue.

I asked the service rep if it required a flash and he said that it was up to date and did not require one at this time. He also stated that if it gets worse to bring it back.

I still feel there is an issue that could be corrected by a flash, but maybe I am being to sensitive to the issue. The truck was built 12/10 and has 4000 miles. What should be done?

Just keep working with the dealer and reporting your events.
There is a newer flash but there are steps to take before you get it.
Some of the tech's here explained the process in a few of the other topics.
Some dealers will install it for whatever reason and some require a CEL before they'll consider the flash. It appears to vary.

1,800 miles ago my dealer reset the learning process for the transmission and it was a problem free 1,800 miles.
Today I was in manual mode and had a nice shift failure from 2nd to 3rd.
The engine revved to 3,000 RPM and the TCM couldn't decide what to do so I coasted to a side road and started over from 1st gear.
All has been fine 40-50 miles since. I think this tops the worst of all my shift issues and am shocked a CEL wasn't thrown.

My dealer is working their options with FoMoCo.
My truck is great except for this issue.
At this point, I need to wait for 4+ lanes of traffic to be vehicle free for a quarter mile in all directions so I can pull out.

Your truck and mine were built about the same time (12/10). I have the 4/5 shifting issue as well. When the tranny is cold, the 1/2 and 2/3 shifts are slightly more clunky and less crisp than when it gets above 140. From what I read in the TSB, this flash will correct it.

That said, I am holding off getting the TSB installed until the techs are comfortable with what they are doing. There is some evidence that CEL issues can pop up if the techs do not reset the adaptive learn tables for the NOX sensor during the flash. I can live with the shifting irregularities for a bit more...

You and me both. Most issues are when tranny is cold, but the 4-5 shift is the worst one. But it's nothing I can't live with for a while. I am waiting until every dealership is on the same page and knows how to implement this flash.

Count me in too

Mine does the same thing and mine was built approximately in April a year ago. Same harsh shift from 4 to 5 and it just started doing it about a month ago and when it is cold. Spud.

I have a 12/10 build and also have the harsh 4-5 shift. I think I'll jump on the wagon and wait a while until they have the bugs worked out of the flash implementation.

You should ask them to apply the TSB 11-4-21 flash.

The way I did it was asked them to print it out and then pointed out the items that applied to my truck.

They took my word for it which is the way it ought to be. So we didn't have to do the leave the thing here and we'll try (and fail) to reproduce the issue song and dance.

In your case, even though your truck was built in 12/2010 and should have some of the TSB 11-4-21 changes already, it certainly doesn't have them all.

I tried this when the last version of this TSB came out think it was 11-3-21?? and they would not do it despite the issues listed in the bulletin that my truck was doing because it did not have a code or CEL. Then that bulletin dissapeared. I knew the new one was out and didn't take a copy with me this time. I assumed they would have no trouble duplicating the issue since it does it every time. Again not unbearable but definitely different then all the other shifts. I'll try again with a different dealer in the future if/when it either gets unbearable or I can be without it. Seems like they always want to keep it a day or so and I can't always do that.
