External temperature off

I have noticed the past couple days that it has been hot here in Texas, the external temperature reading in my truck was 5-7 degrees hotter than what I find from 3 other sources. The three other sources are within 2 degrees of eachother.

So, I am just curious if anybody else has noticed this? Is there any adjustment that can be made? Where and how are the temperature readings taken?

My truck is black, so depending on where the sensor is, not sure if that does or doesn't matter. I also realize the 3 other sources could be taking their temperature readings from a different place in town where the temp might be different than where I am. Just not sure if it is coincidence that my truck always shows 5-7 degrees high.

Mine reads a little high when the truck has been parked in the sun, then once rolling, it usually drops a few degrees. Not sure by how many degrees it's off, as it really hasn't bothered me enough to worry about it. 100+ is 100+ (in the Sonoran desert, two states west of you)

My '05 used to read a little high when left in the sun too. Usually by only a few degrees, but every once in a while that one would be high by 10/12F for whatever reason. Metallic silver on both, so it's not just your black paint.

Yes, it does report high until the engine is started.
Heck, mine has been reporting 108 the past few days.

Must... have... snow...

I know it will show high when first started, or after sitting for a while. Mine is still showing 5-7 high when I pull into the driveway after 25 minutes on the freeway/frontage road.

I know it's probably not a big deal, I blame it on me being an engineer, way too **** about everything.

One thing to consider is that your truck is grabbing the temp of the air directly above the road (as well as exhaust etc from other traffic). Here in Houston, it's been 100 the past 2-3 days. The temp in my truck reads 106, the temp from a thermometer that hangs on a brick wall on my house reads 108, and then i have another one that hangs in a tree in my yard. That one reads 100 - the actual air temp (shaded and no brick or stone around it). Black top roads are even worse. Go aim an IR thermometer at the road at about 3:00 in the afternoon and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Your outside thermostat is located in the drivers side mirror. Just a FYI

I thought the sensor was in the passenger mirror. There is a small access panel on the bottom of the mirror housing with the sensor connected to it.

It is underneath the passenger side mirror. You will see a little access panel as well as a plastic temp probe that's about 1/4" long.

I tested mine yesterday with a digital thermometer. The actual air temp at my house was 99 (shaded area in my yard), but the truck display read 108 over the hot driveway. I hung a thermometer on the passenger side mirror. It read 108.3. That tells me the gauges are right on.

Havn't noticed much discrepancy but it could be a couple of degrees off...

Where I had the problem was in the cold - I noticed that the really cold south Tx mornings 20-25° (That's Cold Here for you northerners) The temp would show correctly but 2-4 hours later when it would be warmed up in the 50's or 60's my screen would still say 25° even after restarts & sitting in the sun while off....

At some point it would all start working again.....

Anyway, I attributed it to being a Texas truck & like me - the cold freaks it out... I still threaten to move to Mexico every winter...

Every vehicle I have owned and rented with an outside temp reading will report high until the vehicle is moving and there is adequate airflow to the temp sensor.

I got in mine this morning and outside temp read 109. It wasn't quite that hot, I'm thinking it's adding the humidity to get the "feels like" temp!

where exactly is the external temp readout located? I have the nav system and was wondering why the new models don't display outside temps. Is it in the nav screen or on the dash?
