I am about to change out all of my glow plugs for the first time and i was wondering if those that have done this had anything I should know before I get started? Are there any stumbling blocks I should look out for or tips I should know before doing it? Any help is appreciated!
Here is a pretty good write up... https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...-pictures.html It's not too difficult, just a PITA if they break off. Most around here have used a piece of 3/8" hose to extract them. Only other tip I can offer is that hopefully you bought them from Clay or Ford and they are Motorcraft...the autolites are junk from what I understand.
Goodluck bro.
Also might want to think about doing the 50 cent mod while you are in there, preventative maintenance... also re-torque all your injectors
2 tools that make it easier. 1/4 drive 10mm deepwell socket, and a pair of long jawed needle nose pliers. both of these will be you new best friends

I did mine a several months ago and the tricks I learned the hard way is:
1.) lay a long and wide board across the grill guard and the top of the radiator to lay on. 2.) take the fan belt off and the ac compressor.... it takes the "tricky" out of removing the passanger side vc. there is enough room to lay it to the side without unhooking the hoses. oh yeah, wash the heck out of the motor before you start to prevent dirt and trash from falling in when you take the covers off. Good luck!
Barney nailed it on the 1/4 in drive 10 mm deepwell socket. I found that if you use 3/8 the socket is a lil thicker and it will bind on one of the rocker arms! And for pulling them out the hole I use a magnet, it hasn't failed me yet! Also
You may want to spin it a lil before you reinstall the new ones cause there will be some oil that gets down into the cylinder. Maybe not enough to hurt but I do it just incase!
I just did mine a few months ago and everybodys advice is spot on. The only thing I did a little diffrent was after removing the valve cover I used my air compressor to blow the oil out of the GP wells before removing them so no oil went into the cylinder upon removal.
Its not a hard job but after I did mine my belly looked like I got into a fight with an angry cat because I didnt lay a thick enough blanket to lay on while I was changing them.
Just a thought, when I did mine a while back, I opted to do a new harness while under there. Might not have needed it, but for me it was one of those, "just in case" things.. Clay has them at a good price and can get it to you pronto.
Yup glow plugs pretty easy, but I dont pull the fan belt or compressor. I use a 3/8 socket and dont have any problems. Just pull the wire off the top of the GP put the 10mm on it and unscrew it. Thats about it.
Thanks guys, I appreciate the help. I like the idea about the new wiring harness, I was actually going to do that. I think there are alot of good tips here. I will let you all know how it turns out.
