white tail deer hunting
as a white tail deer hunter, in minnesota, im curious about things such as, what firearms you hunt with, where you all hunt, what luck youve had, any tips to offer, stories to tell, what your scenery is like, basically anything you want to say.
what is your opiniom om the chronic wasting disease? me, i dont worry about much. if its my turn to leave this world i just might eat some lethal meat, theres nothing i can do about it.
i hope to hear from you all.
i switch off from a 30-30 winchester and a remington 870 slug gun depending on which part of the property im on. some parts are very thick, alot of underbrush, and some parts are wide open hills and valleys. i hunt in walker, mn, in hubbard county.
well, let me know your opinions/thoughts. thanks

I've been hunting whitetails here in New Jersey for the last 30 years. I started when I was 9 years of age.
The last week of September usually starts bow season, though I haven't made it out yet this year. We've been really over run by black bear over the past few years, but you can't hunt them here in N.J. They are getting to be pretty "brazen" too!
Beginning of December starts firearm season. Here in N.J., the entire state is shotgun only (with the exception of muzzleloading rifles).
Mid December starts special "Muzzleloader only" season, which is by permit (lottery drawing by area).
I've had a pretty good success rate. I usually get at least one just about every year. Right now, they are running all over the place here (including my back yard, where I can't shoot 'em).
I hunt in "Northwestern" Jersey where there are a lot of hardwoods, pines, and swamps. Beautiful scenery! So far, the biggest deer I got here was an 8 point buck, 175 lbs. that I took at first light on opening day of bow season a couple years ago. It was raining, cold, and miserable. I had just got in from the night before, as my dad pulled in the driveway to pick me up. I was so tired that I almost didn't go that day.
Bow season, I use the ole Bear Whitetail compound with pin sights.
Firearm season, I use my Remington model 870 Wingmaster 12 ga. pump.
Muzzleloader season, I use my Thompson Center Arms "Hawken Seneca" 54 cal percussion, black powder. I shoot the maxi-ball.
I usually take a week every year in November to go up to Northern Maine (aint happening this year unfortunately). Up there, I hunt with my Winchester model 94 30-30.
This is the first I've heard of the "Chronic waisting disease". I wonder if it has spread here yet?
Anyway, good luck and happy hunting! Sorry for the long post.

Same here in south dakota, Any shots under 150 yds are pretty much a rarity, which pretty much rules out using a 30-30 or shotgun (which I've used both before). Pretty much the rifles of choice around here are 30-06, and 7mm, and a few 270's.
CWD has been reported around here, but it used to be worse about 6 years ago, so bad that there wasn't a season, but the deer have come back to be thicker than bugs on a bumper. I'm not worried about it, when it's my time to go, hey there's no stopping it.
When I go hunting I always take at least two guns, my 30-06 Ruger M77 mkII SS barrel, laminated wood stock with a silver Vari-x II scope (my favorite). And for the very rare close shots, my 30-06 M1 Garand works excelent.
super
Now that's a real challenge. Here in N.J., I've had shots as close as 10 yards, and as far as 75 yards. The woods are pretty thick here so it's kind of hard to get a clean shot beyond that.
Cool thread BTW!
ive been fairly unlucky when it comes to hunting. i think its just the land im on. well, last year my cousin spooked 3 Does towards my stand. i had a doe tag but with it being opening day i didnt want to drop one and not be able to take a buck. so after watching them directly under my stand for about 5 minutes they finally moved on, i didnt see another doe or buck for the rest of the hunting season.
well, live and learn i guess. 3 years ago i missed a 7 point buck. he came down the trial to my backside, and by the time i was able to take aim he knew i was there ( i had to turn around ) and he was moving too fast to get a good shot. he ran around the hill and my uncle dropped him. a very intelligent older buck, that met his match i guess. if i had my H&K .45 i would had him!!!
so this year, about a month before deer season i cleaned up my trail alittle bit, so i can get to it better without making much noise. unfortunatly i hadnt seen much sign of movement or action out there so im kind of skeptical of the area this year, but of course i still have high hopes. good luck to the rest of you.

I plan on hunting all next week in the mornings( I work evenings), then I'll spend the first week of season in La, and come back to Ar to cach opening day here. Through the end of December I"ll probably hunt every weekend and almost every day too.
I use a cva inline with cva powerbelt bullets during muzzleloader season and one of three duning gun season, Remington sportsman 48 12 guage, Ruger m 77 mkII stainless/synthetic 30.06, and a Marlin model 336 in .35 Rem.
Our hunting areas vary from hadrwood bottoms to pine thickets and open clearcuts to wooded ridges and valleys. Some parts of the state are agriculture areas but I don't hunt those areas. The property in Northern La that I hunt is an overgrown farm with tons of deer. The owner has killed wall hangers there the last two seasons. Man I can't wait!

Not even. That's an easy sitting down shot. My rifle is sighted at 200. If you hunt the Coues whitetail or Mule in AZ you must be prepared for anything from pointblank to the edge of your ability. I use either a 30-06 or a 300 WinMag. The mag is normally reserved for elk unless someone needs to borrow a rifle during deer season. I practice shooting in the sitting position at the 200yrd range. Past that, I need a rest. That would be a big rock or my pack while I am in the field. My practical range is 350yrds.
These are based on the ballistics of a 150gr boattail.

250 4 2
300 9 7
350 17 12
I moved to AZ about 22 years ago from southern MI. There it was shotgun or handgun only. I normally went handgun with a 44Mag.
I occasionally take the bow for a walk around here but most shots are too long for me and I refuse to perch in some tree like a little birdie. I'm 6'7" 280lbs. Most of those tree stands are designed by and for the statured challenged.
I DO like hunting, fishing, camping, and my Bronco.

Right on, couldn't have said it better my self!
I reload all my 30-06 loads, and I sight my 06 at 3" high at 100yds. 500 yds is about the longest I've ever shot one, but that was mostly luck I think.
Happy Hunting!!

happy hunting!
I didn't realize you were talking about using a rifle.
I guess I was thinking in terms of how it is in Jersey. In most of the woods here you can't see 150 yards.
You can use just about any weapon you want.I usually start with 30-06 to get meat in the freezer, then go to bow.
When I go to Wis. every year,I use my Mossberg 12 guage, bolt action with scope.
Biggest so far is 15 pt,200lbs dressed,in LaCrosse county,Wis.
