1960 f100 custom cab big window yblock/fordomatic
Ok well im going throught the whole truck cleaning the motor and trans also replacing all seals and gaskets. I dont know what color to paint what and what paint to use. I dont want ford blue or the orang/red color either. I was thinking black but there needs to be contrast. Also there are these heat sheilds that are smashed between the exhaust manifolds and heads. Does there need to be a gasket between them? Or do they form their.own? Please.post pics of your y blocks.

56,welcome to FTE.Those were a type of combination headgasket, heat shield, and are still available for our Y-block motors. There's usually no middle ground about peoples feelings toward them - love 'em,or hate 'em.On the advice of my engine builder from a few years back,I chose to not install the one's I had bought.I believe they make it more difficult to change plugs, which are already not easy because of the ram-horn manifolds.I think those were mainly used on larger trucks, but not sure. They'll fit fine if you choose to use them.

If you visit the Y-block section of FTE,and pose the question, someone will know. Can't remember where I bought mine.
It's purely subjective as to using them.My engine builder recommended against their use,and I complied, like the good boy that I am,not my usual M.O.

As original, all 1960/65 Ford engine blocks, heads, intake manifolds were painted black.
The valve covers were painted specific colors as this was the "qwik" method FoMoCo used for mechanics to ID what sizes the engines were.
Beginning in 1966 (and thru the mid 1980's): All Ford engines were painted Ford Corporate Blue including the valve covers.
There is no truck parts catalog listing for heat shields for 1959/64 F100/250 292's.
1958 F100/700 272/292: (2) B8T-9448-A .. Heat Shield / Obsolete / In case y'all are unaware, heat shields are metal.
Exhaust manifold gaskets are listed in Ford parts catalogs for 1957/64 272/292's, Passenger Cars & Trucks.

I wanted to paint the block and heads black. Then maybe the intake, exhaust manifolds and water pump with the cast iron paint? What do you guys think? Also what color do I paint the stock valley pain? I set it up with a pcv system. Also what color on the valve covers? Remember I like contrast

Bill is correct, they are not Genuine Ford, but rather aftermarket, Felpro I believe. They are a combo,1-piece,head gasket/heat-shield.In the Y- Block section, someone will likely be able to provide you with an actual part number.
For photos of some really nice-looking,though not correct,Y-Blocks,check here:

Enjoy,

Heat shields were installed between the heads and the exhaust manifolds to keep heat away from the spark plug/wires, and that's it.
To install these puppies, all one has to go is remove the exhaust manifolds.
Me thinks that road trip affected your mind...you're prolly still dreaming of that mini jackass.
I thought about quoting the post, then recaptioning the pic with different names...you woulda been Julie, the jackass woulda been...
But, I decided not to...though I'm still thinking about doing it.

You cannot use exhaust manifold gaskets/heat shields over again. Once they are mashed flat between the heads/manifolds, they will be useless if used again.
If it were mine, I'd go to a parts store, buy a set of Fel-Pro or Victor exhaust manifold gaskets...then install them.
Heat shields were not used on 272/292 Y blocks after 1958.
Rams Horn manifolds were an option...and as I recall, use different exhaust manifold gaskets than the regular manifolds.
