Cheap scanner/gauge solution for those using Android

I bought a Motorola Xoom a while back for movies/entertainment, but wanted to add on some sort of engine/truck analyzer to it. I started going through the Android App Store and found a program called Torque. Looked pretty cool but requires a bluetooth OBD II module to connect to the truck. They recommended some $100+ bluetooth modules but I didn't want to spend that much, so I went with the one they said may or may not work with Ford vehicles. The seller said they'd take it back if it didn't work so I had nothing to lose but a few bucks for shipping and some time. Anyways, I bought this bluetooth OBD II module:

ELM327 Interface Bluetooth OBD2 Auto Scanner V1.4 OBDII | eBay

and the Torque app in the app store. The module seems a bit finicky to get connected but once the BT connection was setup, it works pretty good. I have to plug the module into the OBD port, start up the truck, then fire up the app on the Xoom in order to get the gauges going.

I only used it on my short 13 mile commute this morning but it's pretty cool, TONS of data that they could easily integrated into the information screen (another issue of mine).

It not only gives you a number of gauges but also pulls/clears fault codes. I have Intake temp/pressure, coolant temp, fuel trim (2 banks), and O2 volts (2 banks), engine load, etc setup initially but will probably add some more. There's a number of other features that are GPS and accelerometer based (i.e. 0-60, 1/4 mile, HP/Torque numbers (which require engine size and vehicle weight)). Some of the gauges don't work but the majority of them do. I tried a 0-60 this morning on the parkway (pulled over to the side to start) but when I mashed the throttle, my tablet went flying into my kids car seat in the back, so I didn't get an accurate time... Anyways, some crappy cell pics of the app below. No data on the dials since I took the pics from my desk (hence no truck connection).

Thats interesting...keep us posted on how you like it! Maybe a couple 0-60 or 1/4 mile times.

I seen that app and often thought about getting it and a Bluetooth ODB connector . I would mainly be interested in it as a scanner. Does it have the extended parameters for Ford or any other make? My guess is for the cost it's just supports standard codes.

I have tried it and it reads the standard stuff OK. I never got the EOT to display properly by entering in the PID codes. so I broke down an just got a scan gauge-ii it was easier to program and i can still monitor my gauges when i am on a call.

Seems like it has all the functions that the Scan Gauge has (trip indicator, digital gauges, scan tool). I haven't tried all the gauges but I have found a few that don't work (fuel related). I'll have to try the EOT and see if it works on my 6.2. I haven't looked into the extended parameters yet, this is all new stuff to me but as pjerrn stated, you can enter in PID codes to get other parameters. Whether or not they work I'll have to test. The app's website is unbearably slow to navigate so I'll have to wait until the planets are aligned when my patience and free time can join forces and investigate further.

For $40 though, it's cheap and it works (well enough). I can see where this would get annoying on a phone (when a call comes in, limited display), but for a tablet app, I love it. I can cram about 30 different gauges on one screen (they give you 6 or 7 pages to configure/scroll through).

I have alot of the formulas figured out here is mine for EOT

221310
Engine Oil Temp
EOT
-40.0
320.0
x1
Deg. F
((((A*256)+B)/100)-40)*(9/5)+32
Auto

Plug that in your phone and make sure you have updated the app to latest version.

I roughly have 50 or so different PID's for the torque app solely for the 6.0L diesel.

Hope this helps.

I have others if you want them.

A good setup on the torque app reading gauges is much better looking than the scangauge II dont get me wrong both work really well for reading our trucks.

There are MANY pre defined pids already setup on the torque app. Ian (the developer) has been updating his standard list weekly. I have been working mostly on 6.0L PSD stuff.

It does have extended pid section thats where alot of fun can happen. It works for ANY OBD2 car/truck. Read/lookup DTC's. etc.

Cool thing is that you can record all parameters and go back and look at everything to diag.

best 5 bucks I've spent.

Jesterxhead,
I would love to play with some of those PID codes. Do you have them in a spreadsheet or something you could email to me pjerrn(at)gmail.com

I am always looking for new information. I will check the Torque app since i have not been for a while. I got the Scan gauge a month ago after having issues getting the EOT to show.

Does it have things like the FICM voltage readings?

reps given for the great info already.

Bill

Thanks for the reps....

Yes! I have all the FICM stuff basically everything the scangauge can read.

However I am still working on a couple EGR pids.

Hey Matt!!

Been awhile since I talked to you. However I have been off of FTE for awhile. Like the new truck and the app that you found. I will have to keep an eye on this thread to see what you guys find out about it.

Take care.

Hey Darren! Yeah, it's been a LONG time! Hope things are well with you and your family.

I'm still messing around with the app here and there. The majority of the time I'm messing with it is at stop lights. lol. I know, safety first!

Well, I decided to try this app out. Will be getting a BT OBD2 delivered in a couple days.

So, what's the verdict? Are all the Ford PID's working better now?

Here are the Xgauges I now have entered in my Scangauge II. And these are the PID's I would want out of this App. Are they there? Just wondering.

Accelerator Pedal Position (%)
TXD: 07E02209D4

With a little tweaking you can adjust this to read boost as you said.

To do this, just plug in the MAP code - get a reading from it with the key in the on position but the engine off, then based on the reading changed the last 4 digits of the MTH to whatever corresponds to your reading on this table

14.0 -- FF74 (I USE THE "FF71" FOR MY AREA, IT WORKS GREAT)
