I believe that is what Ford tells us to do. But I only use it when it starts searching for gears. Mostly up hills. Otherwise I am towing without the O/D selected. I tow my atv's on a aluminum open trailer 100% without O/D selected!

I have had both engines.
Had no problems with the 4.6; found it under powered at times. It would down shift to get power which was annoying. Both engines get the same milage on highway. the 4.6 did about 45 more miles (city) in a tank then the 5.4.
5.4 is a good tourqy motor; max power 350 ft pds at 2500 rpms. IT will not shift down but bog down and hold gear at 40+50 miles per hour. I liked the power compared to the 4.6. only drawback was you could not rev. it high as the power came on low at 2500. Towed a 25 ft through the mountains and had no problems when driven with reason.
4.6 - 5 years; no problems
5.4- 9 years; no problems
