I have just purchesed a 59' Ford f100 4x4 and I was out with a group of friends 4wheeling and I got stuck in some mud. I thought I was in 4 low trying to get out but the front wheels weren't spinning. After some shoving and swearing, I decided to try it in 4 high and was able to get out with no problem. I got home the next day and tried to shift it in 4 low without the hubs engaged to see if the front drive shaft was spinning, and it was not. What do you think my problem could be?
check to see what t-case you have. I think something that old would have a single speed t-case. Has that body been added to a later 4x4 fame? If so what year is it?
I thought Ford didn't make 4x4's until the mid to early 60's?
But it sounds like a 1 speed T-case.
If not then maybe a broken gear or something? I dunno.
Ford has actually offered 4x4s since the mid to late 30s. But they were Marmon Herrington conversions. I think '59 was the first year of the Ford built trucks.
On the 4wd problem, check to make sure that the shifter has full travel and isn't hitting the body or anything else. It also wouldn't hurt to clean the shift linkage and lube it too. I'm not positive what year the D- 21 single speed transfer case came out, but that is a possibility too. Especially if it was a body swap to a 4wd frame. I can't give any specifics unless I know what transfer case it has.
Those old Fords had gear driven transfer cases they have always been notorious for being hard to get in and out of low range. However it is possible that you have a single speed tranfer case I used to know what make and model t-cases were put in those years of pickups, I can't remember.
