I have seen the write ups on the hutch mods, but no where can I find a reason to do the mods. Anyone wanna clue me in?

Quick answer:
Less air in fuel lines.
Less foam during fill-ups.

Longer Answer:
Air in the fuel lines is bad for the engine/injectors, and creates performance issues. By doing the hutch mod you are moving the return line and moving air bubbles away from the pickup. The harpoon just cuts the longer tubes, so you can fill it up more before you start to foam up.

I know I always track my mileage, and it's a PIA to fill up all the way, because the last 2-4 gallons are EXTREMELY slow because of the foam.

I hope to get mine done this summer, at least the harpoon, anyway. I will probably end up buying the kit for the hutch... so that may be left for another day.

To get rid of the filters in the tank & get that duck-bill deal out of the deal so you don't get air in the fuel flow.

For the every day person would you say it makes a difference/is worth it?

Except for the foam one, I've never had a problem with that. I'm usually full before I can recored my odometer, but I usually fill up at 1/2 tank though.

This surprises me, as there are many threads and posts from folks who have had problems caused by the factory in-tank fuel pickup. It's because there are filter screens in the tank that end up looking like this:

and this:

My opinion and $120 will get you a tank full of diesel, but I highly recommend the Driven Diesel kit linked above. I installed one about a year ago. Quality stuff.

JMHO but for no more than it cost I say yes it's well worth it.
You can get the stuff for less than $45 & have it done in a couple hours.

x2 on improved cackle. My injectors are much quieter without the air in there, and smoother idle. Better lubrication for the injectors, and does your fuel pump a favor too.

For the in tank mods you either drop the tank or lift the bed. I lifted the bed cuz I was working alone, but the bed bolts were a royal PITA. Very glad I did it tho; I can get an extra 3-4 gallons in there, plus it never foams over anymore.

How many times have you cleaned the screens in the mixing chamber inside the fuel tank? Since the screens have never been cleaned, then the older these trucks get, and the more miles they get on them, the more important this will become to the average Joe.

If you happen to get a bad batch of fuel one day with a bunch of trash in it, it will become urgent within a few miles. Otherwise you might be fine for several more years.

THE reason to do the Hutch mod is the screens will clog, starve the engine of fuel and shut the truck down. It happened
to me twice before i did the mods. The second time it clogged, it put so much stress on the pump while trying to suck
fuel that it also blew the pump fuse.

So, the screens cost me two towing bills plus the cost of the mod. Now you have a reason.

My screens were clean, but I did a before and after test with clear tubing and the air bubbles in the fuel bowl went from 'many' to 'zero'. I haven't figured out how to post pictures, but the photos are pretty amazing. The idle cackle disappeared. The truck sounds much nicer and quieter.

I skipped the Harpoon mod, as I have never had any trouble filling my tank and couldn't quite figure out how to get inside the tank to cut off the vent extensions.

I added an external filter near the tank, and have a much higher confidence level that my truck is getting clean, cool, air-free fuel and that I can service the filter if I get a big tankful of dirt or debris.

When you see the Ford design inside the tank, you'll be glad you did the mod. I would buy a kit, as I didn't save a dime doing it myself after I bought all the parts.

My screens are between the white plastic parts (they look solid black).
BTW you also see my Hutch mod using brake line and compression fittings.
