I know what I think, but hope for some feedback before I haul off replacing things!
302 is stock with some bolt ons, headers, intake, and holley carb, and a HEI distributor (MISTAKE, but it's worked so far). I removed the intake and distributor to stop on oil leak. New o-ring on the dizzy and new intake gaskets - I believe the leak was from the silicon sealed area in the front of the motor.
After reinstallation, idle is choppy, sounds like a mis. I attempted to set the timing, but find that it bounces around 2- 3 degrees. I revved slightly - winds up great!
I can only think of 2 possibilities - the distributor failed for some reason. After idling for a few minutes, the body was hot as blazes - hotter than the motor. Would explain the timing bouncing around.
OR - I left the towel in number 8 intake port in head. I don't think so, but just trying to think of things.
Any thoughts how to diagnose this, or what do you think the cause may be ?
I'd start with the most obvious, mark and pull the distributor. Got nothing against HEI, but if it happens to be a Pro Comp distrIbutor, not known for lasting long.
