I am mounting a 69 302 in a 56 F-100. After the motor is all bolted up to the FMX transmission, and the studded motor mounts are all tightened, the motor is about 1/2" higher on the passenger side than the drivers side. Making it look like the engine is about ready to roll over. My question is, other than being ugly......will this cause any problems with vibrations or oil distribution in the engine?
It might have a small effect on the carb float level, and the lower venturi will be a little richer. It won't have a significant effect on the oiling system or result in vibration of itself.
However something else is obviously quite wrong, either a motor mount or frame perch to cause this problem. It seems poor workmanship to not fix this before driving the truck.
What would be your thoughts if you had paid someone to install an engine and when you went to pick up your truck you saw the engine installed leaning over like this?
Great question/point there 'Scoot! I think I will try to loosen the stud bolts, pick the engine again and try to re-mount it on the mounts, tightening down the bolts slowly while observing the engine's position. The mounts were home made from plate iron by a previous owner. I didn't really see any problems with them. The holes where the stud bolts feed through are slotted, so it could be one sides motor mount has a longer slot than the other causing one stud bolt to bottom out lower than the other.
Are there other MM kits one can buy that can be bolted to the frame?... I don't have a welder.
Well Sacramento Vintage Ford lists mounts as does Transdapt, but you'll have to check with them to see if they will work with the F-100. TD ones are "universal" while the SV ones imply that they are for the F-100. Here's the photo of the Transdapt mount:
At least you can compare your homemade ones to these. Note that all the engine weight is transmitted through the welds, which seems none too strong. However Transdapt is a reputable company so they are must be up to the job.
But I would first take your mounts out and compare them side by side, lengthening holes, adjusting as required to see if you can make them work, while insuring that they are sturdy enough to be trustworthy.
Thanks for your help 'Scoot and Mike. Beanscoot, you were right about the perch mount, one sits a little lower than the other, so I decided to try it as Mike has suggested, and shim it in. Now it's within a little better than 1/8", which I think I could live with.
Also Beanscoot, Thanks for your mount recommendations, I'll check them out. Also LMC Truck I see has bolt in motor mount kits for 53-56 F-100's using SBF. Anyone ever use these?
