Ok so my truck hhas been leaking coolant off the back corner on the driver side head. I thought the gasket must have been leaking so when I took it all apart the gasket looked perfect. After tearing down this motor it has definitly has been rebuilt. All the gaskets came off the motor all in one peice and very clean. So any ideas on if it wasn't sitting properly or is the head warped?? Its a 1979 ford f150 351w thanks
The head could be warped, could be cracked, or could have been torqued down improperly. First thing I'd do is find the torque specs, tighten it down and hope that fixes it.
While the head is already off, I'd take it to a good machine shop and have em check to see if it is warped and maybe even Magnaflux it to check for cracks. Why put it back on in hopes that it was just improperly torqued? Since you didnt do the rebuild yourself, youre just guessing if you put it back on. It wont cost much to have it checked out and will save you the cost of the gaskets and the time to do it again. Do it right, then you know what you have..................Unless you just happen to have the gaskets laying around and just need the "practice"...............
If you still have the head off, take a striaght edge and lay it across the bottom of the head. Slide it from top to bottom looking under the striaght edge. This will give you a idea if it warpped or has a low spot. Price's may be different where you live but they will check a head for $30 here and it might pay you to do that since you are that far down on the motor. I agree with fluxx also it could be the head was not torqued right.
