2000 Ranger 3.0 issues
about 3 months ago I replaced the timing set and water pump and seals.. put it back together and everything worked great... until yesterday...
Driving home, came to a stop sign, and suddenly it had a MAJOR LOSS OF POWER... started running rough and could barely pull itself the last 1/2 mile home...
when it does start, it idles very rough and the settles down if you feather into the throttle. (in PARK-- not sure about under load)
I unplugged the TPS and it would start and idle a bit easier..... without having to give it any additional throttle...
REPLACED TPS and now it will not start at all... any ideas? was the TPS even a likely culprit afterall?
PLEASE HELP
and THANK YOU ALL IN ADVANCE
Unless you get a code saying otherwise, then I doubt it's a TPS issue. I've never heard of them failing so suddenly.
Not a lot to go on, but If I had to make a preliminary guess, I'd go with some sort of fuel-delivery problem. A fuel pressure check would help with the diagnosis, in any case.
Regarding the fuel pressure test, keep in mind 1998+ Rangers utilize what is known as a "mechanical returnless" fuel system which has the following characteristics:
(1) there is no return line running back to the fuel tank from the fuel rail;
(2) designed to operate at higher fuel pressure- specs are 64psi at all times when pump is on (+/-8psi);
(3) the fuel pressure regulator is now in the fuel tank with the pump, not on the fuel rail.
