Original paint markings

So on my '48 F1 cab, I have a date painted in yellow about where the gas tank sits. I assume it's a build date for the assembly line. It's about 1.5" tall for the lettering. Has that stencil look to them (military-ish).

So when I tore this truck down, I removed the PO installed 9" with the original springs and overloads awhile ago. Well, today I went to separate them so that I could use this 9" for another frame I have, that I put a bunch of engines on, to make room in my garage. So anyway, on top of the main leaf on the driver side, I find the same yellow paint, and what looks like lettering, but there isn't enough there to make out what it says.

For 5-star restoration purposes this could mean something, but I'm just curious.
Anyone else find this yellow on their rear springs?

Can't say I've seen them in the same places as you, but I have some bed sides from an early '50 that have the same kind of stenciled paint markings in what looks to be a date code, under the fender area. I forgot about that until you brought it up.

When I took apart the '51 F6 recently, I found some chalk marks at the bottom of the left cowl, behind the splash shield. I took pictures for posterity, just because.

Scott, I have a yellow paint stenciled date on my cab, inside the engine compartment just above the seam from the firewall to the cowl. It's OCT 11 1948. We figure it's the truck's birthday. We've covered it so it won't get painted over and plan to leave it original.

I bought new Eaton springs for my front and they have stenciled yellow block letters on them with the Eaton P/N. The old ones I took off (now on BobbyT's) had them too.

Do the leaves have a groove in them for oiling? If not they likely aren't original.

The paint on the leaf spring is the Ford engineering number. I recently purchased a set of NOS springs for the concours restoration of my 1960 F-100, which had the paint stencil you speak of. I'm not sure how Ford assembled the early F-series trucks, but the 1957-1960 trucks received a second coat of chassis black once the suspension, steering, and brake line components were installed, thus covering this number. Your springs could be Ford replacements, aftermarket replacements, or the originals (no second chassis paint)...who knows.
