i plan to utilize the extra long weekend to finally change my sparkplugs at 185000 miles (it was done previously at around 90K)
i removed all the coilpacks and boots and noticed two things.
7 of the boots were remarkably clean and pliable. to the point where i considered leaving them in and returning the new ones i had just bought... of course i wont. but it crossed my mind.
the second thing was that one boot, one lonely boot, was so brown and red and charred that it nearly fell apart getting it out.
what does this mean?
the charred one was not the back passenger side one (the second most difficult one to get to) or the one under the fuel pressure regulator (the most difficult one to get to) so im wondering why it was in such bad shape considering that it was relatively to get to and was most likely changed with all the rest at 90K
any ideas?
anyway, i sprayed out the holes multiple times with compressed air, then put a bit of WD40 in the holes to loosen the threads overnight and called it a day... it was getting dark
so its not from the plug arcing or something terrible like that?
thats good.
now that i have the fuel rails off, is there a good way to get them back on?
on the last car i took fuel rails off, there was a clip on the injector to hold it into the rail so they all came out of the intake.
in this case, there is no clip so half are in the intake and half are in the rail.
You waited almost 100,000miles to change them out? I sure hope you put in some good spark plugs. Use some anti seize stuff in there too. I think your 5.4 is the 2V so it shouldnt be too bad.
DO NOT USE Thread anti seize, you need the ground path of the threads for the sparkplug to get all the power to the fuel.
I just installed new motor in my v10. I made my own plug wires. out of stainless steel wire rope and sparkplug connectors. use the factory boots and there are so much better than the springs. resistance went from .5 ohms to .o3 ohms. Major more voltage getting thru
I got a 99 v10 with 142000 that I bought with 90some thousand on it I don't know if the plugs have ever been changed with all I've read on the plugs breaking during a change kinda scared to mess with it truck runs fine passes emissions with flying colors

If you dont use antisieze, corrosion will develop between the dissimilar metals and ruin the threads causing an eventual plug pop. Use copper antisieze and torque to 14 ft.lbs.
