I'll start looking for a 3rd member (2.75), while I'm asking questions might as well ask, does anyone have this part for sale or know of anyone that would. My sline count is 28. Thanks Kevin Felix
I have one I'm sure, how far away from Spokane, Wa are you? Shipping probably won't make it worthwhile. Check your boneyards for the big cruiser LTD's, mercs, and lincolns too.
jhooch, do you have the 3rd member, is it a 2.75 with 28 spline count. If so what will you sell the 3rd member for. I live in Tx. I'll have to check on the shipping. I'd guess that the shipping would include weight of the 3rd member and distance. I can weigh my extra 3rd member (3.50) and call a shipping co. Please tell me what the cost of your 3rd member will be. Thanks Kevin Felix
I'm trying to get a little taller tire so if I need to run 65 mph or 70 mph down the road I can for an exetened time, say up to 4 or 5 hours. I would prefer the engine run at a bit lesser rpms.
This is psychological more than anything else. If your engine is in good condition it will stand a 65-70mph 4 or 5 hour trip with the stock gearing with no problem. How often do you plan to make this trip? I'd be concerned about loosing my everyday driveability for the sake of several hundred RPM on the highway. This is where overdrive becomes a great option.
Thanks agaian I've purchased a 3rd member (2.75), going to install next week and if I do not like it then I can take it out and replace it with the old one (3.00). Thanks again for all your help, you guys are a wonderful group of men. Kevin Felix
while we're on this subject i have a few questions of my own...i am a proud new owner of a 65 f100 352 AT. first one goes to kevinfelix how big of a difference was changing the stock rear to the 300? will the 275 or 300 hold up to pulling and towing; i know there is a trade off between hp and gas milage. but will the 352 w/the automatic still have power. lastly can the gear ratios in the tranny be changed to give me the desired effect or is this a route i want to avoid. thank in advance for all following
Spence the changing of the 3rd member is not hard at all, just pull the axles / take the drive shaft lose / unbolt the 3rd member then go back the same way you took it off ( just backwards). I do know that it will not have no where near the pulling power that it had with the original (3.54) gears had. But I'm not going to pull a 5th wheel or a load of cattle with this pickup. Maybe a motorcyclce trailer w/motorcycle or something very small (light). I don't even know if it will pull these smaller loads. I do not even know if I'll ever pull anything, but I do know that I'll still have all three 3rd members and if I not like 1 or the other I can jack up the 65 and change to the one I like the very best. For now I'm going to try the 2.75. One other thing, I currently have a standard 4 speed transmission, hopefully can find a automatic sometime in the future. Thanks for asking Spence. Kevin Felix
Well its done, the new 3rd member in. The only thing thats different is the 3rd member, its a 2.50 instead of a 2.75. So that said I went from a 3.54 to a new (used) 2.50. Sure theres not as much power as I once had. but the trade of was well worth it. The motor just purrrrs at 60 mph (which is actualy 74 mph according to our local police). The 4 speed standard is a real blessing. Old granny (1rst gear) is just like second used to be, as far as taking off from a dead start. I don't believe I can haul a trailer full of cattle, like the old timers used to do with this kind of pickup, but I did not get the this old pickup for that reason. I got the pickup for a daily driver and I'm very happy with the way it performs right now. So, that said don't knock it till you've tried it. Thanks for all your ideals and suggestions. You'll have been really helpful and a blessing to boot. Kevin Felix
How about taking off your stock fan / replacing with an electic fan (for a little extra horsepower) then installing a A/C, then will the electric fan be effective enough to keep the 352 properly cooled down. Thanks Kevin
