Some towing questions....

Hello everyone. I have some questions that i cant quite seem to find the answers to. I have a 08 f150 4x4 crew with the 5.4 and 3.55 gears. I bought it last year used with about 20k miles on it and got a great deal. One of the only things that I was bummed it didnt come with was the tow setup like my 05. So heres the deal. I just got a boat and need to get a hitch for the truck. I am looking at the curt class IV hitch for it and just install it myself. So i guess the question i have is am i going to have a problem towing a 5k load or less with the truck being it doesnt have the enlarged tranny cooler like the tow ready ones come with. I have an edge evo so i can keep an eye on the tranny temp as well. Also it came with a 4-pin connector but thinking i should upgrade to a seven pin. What do you all think? Questions? Concerns?? Thanks alot y'all. Bob

%k or less I would say no you should not be concerned about that. If you were pulling more then that maybe but then only on long trips.

When you pull this much how far and long will you be pulling it?

Sounds like you are on the right track. Does your boat trailer have breaks? Then yes you will need the 7 pin connector. How about the tongue weight? Do you have the owners manual? It should tell you the towing capicity of your truck.

No more than an hour or two just getting around here to the boat ramps in pudget sound. It just has the emergency break on it so if you have to stop really quick it will lock them. I think thats whats on there, not for sure though. The capacity should be the same as any other 08 f150 i think its somewhere around 10k max isnt it? I just want to really make sure i dont need to upgrade that cooler. What is a good temp to keep it around you guys think? i was thinking no more than 190 or so.

So i just ordered a Curt class 4 hitch fro autoanything. says its good for 10 to 12K with i dont think ill ever tow. thanks again for your help guys.

The transmission temperature chart I have says you can expect 100,000 on your tranny if you keep the temp at 175 AVERAGE or below. Mine usually runs around 160 towing my 25 ft RV. But will climb to 210 or so pulling a long grade. But then cools back down on the flats or going back down.

Your boat trailer, if it has brakes, are more than likely surge brakes. You can tell by the huge coupler. You won't need a 7 pin receptical unless you get a travel trailer etc with electric brakes. You will need an electric controller in the cab for that.

I have an 06 FX4 with the 5.4 and i changed my gears to 4.56 and i tow alot of weight with mine...... One being my 30 foot toy hauler with 2 big quads in it.. loaded water gear firewood well over 8000 lbs... Now on step hills my trans will go up to 210, 212 once hitting 220.. but normaly it runs between 140 and 180... I have 106,000 miles on my truck take very good care of it and have used ford 5-20 since i bought the truck.... 355's are more of a highway gear and on step hills you will feel the boat and know it;s back there. Just keep an i on your trans temp.. And if you ever wat to up grade to 3.73's i still have the stk ones from my truck still in very good shape.. i'll take 100.00 for them plus you pay shipping. They have 80 k on them.
