Interesting that the auto looks like it has a different bolt pattern than the stick?

The best idea I've heard to run another alt is to mount it physically the same as OEM, but wire independently to an isolated voltage regulator and batt's. That way you don't have to integrate the two and if the primary alt fails you can swap batt's and get home and charge the others at the same time. I think it would work, but haven't seen it done yet.

Yeah, I think so. If I remember correctly, we use Boss Air products on some of our work trucks. I think we tried the direct drive and installation was really difficult because there wasn't very much room down there. I think we got it to work on our F550 trucks but I think their frames might be a little different than our trucks...

You might have better luck looking for hydraulic drive air compressors because they take up less space under deck and the compressor itself can be located in the bed. I think Boss has them as well.

I am sure there are other brand choices to look at also. I think some of our newer trucks have VMAC air compressors that mount under the hood. They seem to work pretty darn well. You might have to call them and see if they have a kit for the 7.3L. I see 6.0, 6.4 and 6.7 on their website but not 7.3. You would think they would have something for our engines since there are millions of them out there...

Here is the VMAC website.

Mine doesn't have a PTO provision, so PTO wouldn't be an option, and I looked at the belt driven model thats on RiffRaff's website and if VMAC has a kit for my truck it'd probably be out of my price range. I think based on the time and potential money involved in installing a second alt. I'll be going with either a mechman or DC Power unit to replace my primary, they both claim 270a of output which would be more than two OE units.

Have you looked in to converting a York compressor. I used to hear of these all the time, usually off roaders. Never personally run one, so I can't tell you how well they actually work. Just a thought anyway. You work for someone around here or are you an independent? What kind of mechanicin' do you do? Just curious, don't mean to intrude.

I did, I've actually got a friend with an 81 f-100 that's got a york on it that he's converting to a serpentine setup and will be changing to the newer style compressor. my only concern with that type of setup would be a way to power the thing. I think a york style compressor takes about 2 hp to power, and that'd be a 160 amp 12 volt motor. But the CFM gain over what I've got now wouldn't be worth it, if I'm using my impact I can get the wheels off one side of a vehicle before my pumps kick back on. and from there it only takes a minute and a half to go back up to 150 PSI.
