There is an open circuit detected.
Can be one of the following,
Open coil, test with an ohm meter.
Coil plug,
PCM internal switch for that cylinder is faulty not pulsing the coil with a ground signal.
The harness between the coil plug and PCM is open.
Testing the PCM and harness, use an ohm meter to see if the PCM puts out a ground to the coil, when cranking over.
Don't drive the truck with this condition because that cylinder is passing raw gas to the cats on that bank and can overheat them causing another hassle with replacing that cat assembly if you get a code 420 later on..
Good luck.
If you begin to smell anything it's the cats at about 900° and a dull red.
This will melt the coated substrate and ruin the cat besides causing a blockage.
If you need to replace the right side assembly, take a good look at it and be sure the replacement has the OX sensor bungs in the right locations so there is no interference.
One well known exhaust maker is selling improperly assembled assemblies for these trucks that you cannot use unless you go to a muffler shop and have the rear cat cut and rotated so it's OX sensor has clearance.
They have been notified about it.
I bring you this info because the OEM is over $1700 plus installation.
As these trucks are now older, the aftermarket replacements use a standard size rear cat that likely will last the rest of the trucks life as opposed to the large one used by the OEM that was meant to be large enough to last full life of the vehichle barring anything that goes wrong.
Good luck.
Took truck to ford dealership to see what was causing rough idle and was told that number 2 cylinder compression was low by approx 20 percent and when tech attempted to remove sparkplug to inspect he found the threads were damaged and that the truck will require hear removal to inspect for damage. Then was told better to replace cylinder head which will cost approx 4500 upwards, truck in good shape but with age at 1999 not worth that kind of expence. Was told that the spark plug could be shook with your hand it was that loose in the cylinder, anyone know of any other fixes for this issue or is it time to look for another truck as i was hoping to get another couple years out of this truck then get an f150 with the ecoboost.Thaks again for any help
