But on a better note.. well not for me atleast.
I took my truck off road the other day, nothing crazy but I just went down a dirt road in 4 low (to test it out). I turned the truck off and walked around and when I turned it back on the 4x4 indicator didn't turn on and it seemed to kick me out of 4 low but 4 hi works. So I'm not sure whats going on with it, any help would be appreciated guys.
it was before the truck was shut off. but i dont want to force the stick to go, it stops like theres no more for it to go.. i really dont even know what to do or how to go about diagnosing it.
Your truck should have the Borg Warner 1345, that's what my 84 F250 Diesel 4x4 has. I have noticed mine can be tempermental when shifting in and out of 4 low. What you might try doing is get the truck moving slowly forward then shift the transmission into neutral and let it coast to a stop. Then try shifting into 4 low. It seems like these transfer cases have a tendency to bind up in 4 low, shifting into neutral seems to help. Is it making any grinding noises?

I think it did for about 2 seconds.. i stopped the truck shifted back to 2 hi, then back to 2 low the light still didnt come back on. but it felt like it was working.
These t cases are quite tempermental. If I remember correctly my Ford factory book stipulates that I shouldn't **** into four high at like more than 35-45 mph and I shouldn't shift into low while on the move. I generally, put it in gear roll it forward, hit neutral stop, lock in my transfer case, and then back into gear and go to town.
You will definately know if you're in 4 low because you really have to give it some throttle to get the truck moving any kind of speed. I noticed the "4X4" indicator lights in these trucks come and go sometimes.
The borg-warner in my 89 has a shifter where you are supposed to pull the lever toward your leg before it will move back into 4 lo. Mine was popping out of 4 low until I realized I wasn't having to move the lever sideways to get it into 4 low. Come to find out, there is a large bolt that the shifter pivots on, and it rusted and stuck the shifter to the left missing the "gates" in the shifter. Once I freed that up, the shifter popped back to it's proper position, and the "gate" on the shifter keeps it from popping out of 4 low.
Parrot, I had the cover off of my transfer case (the boot) when I removed the lever, I don't recall seeing such a piece. I believe it was straight throw but I could be wrong...
The 1356 has the odd shift pattern, the 1345 has a strait throw. Check all your linkage bushings and the mountin bolts on the case and the shifter, make sure there are no sticks shoved up in there either, my 1345 slides into low with a two finger pull in the stick from 2hi.
