It's no big deal man. If you need any other pics that might help you, let me know. I know I was worried about using the P heads also, but it turned out pretty easy to get around the plug angle.

im buildin my 351 now, but im at a bit of a crossroad. im doin this as an absolute budget build. to give an idea of exactly what im doin, i picked some low mile gt40 heads off a junkyard exploder, i ported them very thoroughly being careful of the valve seats (valve job too much $$), and now im about ready to attack the intake manifold. i can port the **** outta the lower, but obviously i cant do much to the upper. i wanna squeeze every bit out of this motor that i can, and i know the 351 upper is a joke.

my question is this:

-do the ports of the upper intake off the exploder motor match up to the 351 base ports? i shoulda looked when i was there, but it was 100 degrees and pullin the heads as fast as i could was just about all i could think about.

-assuming the ports matchup, can i port the "restrictiveness" out of the lower enough that i wont have to shell out for an aftermarket base? i think i could live with spendin a little dough on the typhoon upper (that is if the exploder upper isnt worth it) and scavenge the "car" style parts off the exploder.

well i answered my own question thanks to some pics conanski posted of the lowers. . . .

so at this point, i guess i gotta decide to get . input would be helpful here cuz i have to decide what im usin before i spend hours grindin away at the base. i dont wanna spend 400 bucks on the typhoon setup, so id like to know just how restrictive the 351 intakes are and go from there.

The Typhoon is the cheapest aftermarket intake you're gonna find and even then you need a throttlebody as well so it gets pricy quick.
The stock 5.8 intake really isn't that bad, the lower is the choke point and here is lots of material there that will allow some pretty extensive porting. Besides opening up the port exits where they meet the heads try your best to straighten the sharp curves in the runners.. meaning carve away the short side radius and leave the outer side alone, even if that means not keeping a consistent runner cross section, some guys that have done a lot more porting than I have airflow data to prove that this works.

perfect, this is ultimately what i was hoping for (the base being the choker). i already inspected the base and there is no problem reachin in there. i actually thought about re-shaping the base to mate up with the 5.0 upper, do you think there is any gains to be had by trying to jump ship to the cavernous 5.0 upper? with all the work i put into the heads, i dont want to negate what ive done with an intake that cant give what the heads can take. my power band will be that of the SD friendly cam's range. of course id be lookin at countless hours of grindin (reshapin the 351 base) that i'd rather avoid, but if theres the kinda gains im lookin for, i gotta do it. (if it aint easy its not cheap, if its cheap it aint easy)

basically what im seein is that the 5.0 intake is hugely oversized, or the 5.8 intake is undersized. cuz those 5.0 runners are massive compared to the 5.8.

im hopin to swap the motor next weekend, i have an adjustable FPR, gauge, and a wideband to try to get it running decent.

my question now is, what are the options beyond that? i haven't acquired a 351 computer yet, is there a particular comp that i should seek out? how about a SD lightning computer? i tuned my ls1 and ive tuned other MAF cars (i have a buddy that owns a shop with a dyno and the obdII stuff is about as simple as it gets to tune), but i really have no idea how to go about dealin with this thing, what software i can/should acquire, or what exactly i have to attach to the computer. ive read enough to know that there's generally too much info for too many different setups to figure out specifically what the hell i need for this thing.
