What kind of ATF are you using in your older Expeditions?

Getting ready to change it in a 2001.

Mercon or Mercon 5?

 

According to FOrd's TSB from July 2001, it depends on which transmission you have:
The 4R100 needs Mercon - the 4R70 wants Mercon V.

Subsequently, in 2006(?) Ford discontinued licensing Mercon so Mercon is no more.

IIRC, Ford then decided it was okay to use Mercon V in the 4R100.

Thank you PDQ, that's about my recollection but I wanted to verify.

12 qts of Mercon/Dextron III is about $15 and Merc 5 is almost $6 a qt.

I'm going to change the fluid in my tranny tonight w/ Mercon [again] to see if the chirp problem is affected.

 

If you have the 4R100, okay.
But if you have the 4R70, Ford wants Mercon V (its a synthetic) in it.

 

My door sticker shows an "E" so that's a 4r100 tranny.

I changed 18 qts ATF and the noise is still there.

 

My local Ford place informed me that they have no Mercon in the joint. They say that at this point, Mercon V is superior to Mercon in all ways and there are no boxes that cannot have Mercon V. The have only barrels of Mercon V
