Well Im a newbie here but after owning ford trucks for the last 20+ years I decided I want to go bigger...well tire size that is
I own a 2010 supercab 4x4 and running stock 235/75/17 tires but I want to go bigger...how big can I go without messing the calibration/tune off my gauges and warrenty ? I want tires with a little more aggressive threads for when I go off road to my hunting spots..I have done well with the stock tires on all my past 4x4's but now I want more...shouldve bought the Raptor but I didnt...lesson learned. I want to use the stock rims for now and was thinking of running 33's or something similar and what is the purpose and benifit of a levling kit and why? I hope people dont think me a idiot since I dont honestly I was also thinking of getting new shocks but not sure what is good out there..what are some reccomendations
thanks in advance
You can run a 33" without any rub.
Anything bigger than stock is going to alter your MPH readout, trans shifts, etc...it's just a matter of "how much".
Here's a tire size calculator that I find to be handy. Lets you compare a number of different sizes, and tells you the % difference and how far off your speedo will be. Tire Size Calculator - tire & wheel plus sizing
I just put some 33's on mine about 6 months ago and it fills the wheel wells nicely without being too big. my speedo was actually reading higher than my actual speed with stock tires, but with the 33's it's spot on perfect. I didn't' notice any significant loss of power or MPG's either. I was thinking of a leveling kit and bigger than 33" tires, but didnt' want the rear end to sit lower when towing/hauling stuff in the bed. which got me to thinking that i could do the leveling kit and then put air bags in the back, but those aren't cheap.
WOW..that looks awesome....thanks for the link..I dont understand some of the numbers...so I take it that a leveling kit will just bolden the stance but with towing it can raise the front higher and what would you guys reccomend on tire sizes...I like the idea of 33's and hopefully that wouldnt change to much..I was looking at 275/75/17 for tire sizes..would any of you guys run this or do you have another reccomedation..I plan to keep the stock rims for awhile...does anyone know what all the stock sizes that a 2010 xlt 4x4 runs...shouldve paid attention when I got my truck...when I had my 2007 5.4 XLT 4x4 supercab..I believe I was running 255's but I had real bad wear on those tires and had to replace in the first year..wondering if I had a fluke..normal driving with some towing and little back woods...thanks again for the info
well I have another question...what is the difference between 235/75/rx17 and 245/75/rx17e what is the significance of the E and can the middle number (75) be different like a 60 or 70?
thanks again

A 235 would be 235 mm wide,245=245mm wide. The higher the middle # the taller the tire.

any body has a reccomendation on tires and size?
You can go to a place like Tirerack.com and check out all kinds of tires. I just popped over there for example, a search for 285/70-17. I looked at BFG AT and the spec on that tire is a 32.8" tall and 11.5" wide. You should be able to fit something like that stock, my stock GY's were 32.2" tall but 18" rims. You can punch in a tire size and compare all different brands too. Check it out
i believe the "E" on one of your tire sizes is the load range. this is the load range for an "LT or Light Truck" tire. It's a 10 ply tire so it will be a little stiffer than the tires you have on your truck right now. I noticed a little bit stiffer ride when i put on my E rated tires. I just got my first set of BFG AT's, about 6 months ago and can't be happier with them. they have a nice aggressive look, but don't kill the gas mileage. they do have some road noise, but i can't hear that over my exhaust.
