I love cruising with the windows down but at high speeds the wind tends to get nasty. Well this last weekend I was cruising home in the suburban (it's not mine, please don't hurt me!) and noticed that if I turn the vents all the way that there is no air in my ear and that there is a nice breeze right in my face. Wow, I felt like I made an amazing discovery yet at the same time felt that I was an idiot for not knowing this. Now I like these things and want to keep mine on the pickup.
So how many of you guys enjoy using your vent windows? And also, does anyone use those clip-on things for them? What do those do? They seem curious.
O, and since I'm going to have to make these nice, does anyone know a place that sells stainless frames? I have one and need another one.
During the one mile I have driven my truck, I can hardly describe the sheer thrill of owning factory correct vent windows. I had to leave something stock. I like the look of vents alot but it is a personal preference.
I know I have a different era truck. But if you like to cruze with the windows down they are great. We can have both windows down and the vent windows open about a 3rd and my wifes hair doesn't even get messed up. A sliding rear window makes it even better.
Gotta agree, although I haven't driven my truck yet. I had two 1960 vehicles with the same type vent windows and they were absolutely fabulous in terms of moving air without ripping your skin off.
I read an article a long time ago about how the basic design was arrived at based on the aerodynamics - but that's not really important. Just enjoy!!! I plan to go without A/C and stay cool with my stock vents!
Gotta agree with George. I'll be sticking with the old 2-55 air conditioning, too. Of course, you hot rodders will probably upgrade to something like 2-80. Can't let all those horses go to waste!
Hi, I love my vent windows and with the cowl open what else could you want I also think having them open gives the truck a true classic look.........
Making these good trucks "look newer" isn't always better! Even my 10 year old son knows that. As we were driving tonight in my mini van with the windows down (It has finally been a warm spring week here in Central PA) he put his window half way up. He said he got too much wind and it made too much noise. he then said with out my prompting that he prefers riding in my truck since it has wing vents! He also likes the fact that when its real hot he can turn them the whole way open and blow the breeze directly on him. I also like the vent for the division bar. It great to hold on to when cruising with the window down and your arm resting on the door. Its so natural. Mybelief is Detroit removed the wing vent because the one piece glass was more cost efficient.
vent windows rock, no need for air conditioning, cruising down the road with the vent windows, theres nothing quite like it
... all the talk reminds me that the "Great 'fenders" is helping me to get my hands on a set of vent windows for my 54. Some pre-owner had removed the whole thing and shut the hole with solid glass and lotsa silicone.
I'm glad someone else posted this question. I was too lazy to do it myslef.
I was actually considering going with one piece glass on my '50 F-3, but my new work truck (2002 F250) doesn't have them and I miss them (the old work truck, '97 F250) had them).
Now to restate the last part of Clayton's question, where can you find new parts to rebuild the vent windows. Mine are pretty shot.
Gotta keep the vents. When the truck is done I'll have vent windows, cowl vent and magic air to keep me cool!!
yeah, I haven't had the chance to use the vent windows on my 52, but I can say that I loved using them on my 79.. they are certainly something I plan on keeping around..
I wouldn't get rid of my vent windows for the world. But mine were bolted shut when I got mine, a solution to the security risk they posed when it was in LA.
Adios,
Brett
PS. I feel sorry for those that just follow trends like lemmings. And the next guy that has to 'fix' it.
I like the options with the vent window: window up, down, 1/2 way, whatever... + the vent window open, closed, a cool place to hang on with your left hand, air deflector.... etc etc etc.
I also have the sliding rear window, so when I open both windows all the way, air flows through without that mysterious aerodynamic affect that windows down with a solid rear window causes. LOL
But, bottom line, it IS a personal preference. The single window looks good, too... but since you asked, I gotta stick with my original claim: I like the options that the vent window gives.
