Power Steering Bracket

Hey!!! Anyone here ever had their mounting bracket for the power steering and altenator break??? IT CAN HAPPEN!!!!

I was leaving my sons Preschool graduation and the when I put the truck into R. BAM!!! no steering so I got out and looked into the engine bay... the outer bolt that holds the power steering pump on the bracket broke clean through...

Called 2x Ford Dealerships and they told me the bracket was no longer in production and they couldn't ordered one for get one for me.... Even when I tried to tease them I would have the truck towed to them so they could steal money from me to fix it.... Found one in a junk yard hoping it will work and hold up....

But the bigger question is what caused it and WHY DOESN"T Ford still support such a part that breaks... cuz the guys at at the junk yard told me I'm not the first to have this problem....

Pointers and Thoughts PLEASE!

Very interesting, is this a problem we need to add to the list of preventative maintenance?

Well I'm say this much I"m already looking for a 2nd bracket to have in storage if this used one breaks too.... I just can't believe they don't make that part still... This engine is still in production down in South America I thought... besides the fact so many are still running here in the States I can't wrap my head around this....

The bracket is made of Aluminum and looks like pot metal not a high end quality piece of steel...

I'm kinda wondering if my power steering pump locked up and caused this problem... about a month ago I had to replace the line on the upper side of the fill neck running to the hydra-boost by the brake booster... not sure if I'm using the wright terms... the gasket in the line went bad at the 90 degree turn leaving the pump.... So I'm wondering if my pump lost too much fluid that very short 10 minute drive I did to get it home and fix it...

I'd say we team together and see if anyone knows of a aftermarket bracket or knows someone that can get the project started... heck I'll invest in a small company that wants to do that!!!!

Other wise if parts become a problem for this engine I'm going to have to replace it with a Cummings engine...

I will post pictures tomorrow or thrusday when I get the new pump and can go fix the truck...

I'll see if I can find a number and call them tomorrow ... I would love to have a steel bracket in place of these Aluminum OEM models. I have a friend who works for Navistar over in Illinois... He might know what to do... I"ll post the pictures of the broken one tomorrow or thrusday... pending on how early I can get out of work... Military life

That is very odd. I was asking Ed if he wanted to take my extra bracket. Guess I will hold on to it in case of something happens to his or mine.

With what I know now I'd like to replace mine just in case and my question to Ford is why Cast aluminum? Seriously? This is a diesel engine, to much back pressure on the belt and this engine is either going to break the belt or snap something else, AT AN IDLE!

I stripped a bolt on my aternator mount and ended up picking up a free bracket from one of my customers who runs a diesel repair shop... it even had a working power steering pump still attached, so it was a killer find. All I have to do now is re-tap my original bracket to have a spare bracket AND a spare PS pump!

One thing... make sure you re-align the PS pump pulley at the proper position or you will end up eating serp belts until you get it in the right position. (don't ask me how I know this!)

Barney ran his pump dry, not on purpose, to the point I think it actually melted the res. When he came down to ricks he changed it and when he pulled the belt off the pump was loose to the bracket. So is it going to break, maybe. But if it was a weak link I think barney's would of broke!

Hey does regular power steering fluid work in these pumps... cuz my AMSOIL thing tells me to put Synthetic Universal Automatic Transmission (ATFQT) Fluid or Torque-Drive Synthetic Transmission Fluid (ATD1G)..

Any thoughts cuz I just fixed it and drove it home from the parking lot were it broke down!!!! I'll post pictures in a few.... of the bracket.

Regards, Madog
