Alright, I'm sure this is a stupid question, but I'm just not familiar with automatic transmissions as all my trucks prior to this have been manuals.
In 3rd gear, under acceleration, at around 2,000 RPM, I can hear the engine change tone a little, and the RPM's will stop climbing for a second even though I am still speeding up. What exactly is going on? Something to do with the torque converter?
Again, sorry for the dumb question, just learning on the fly here.
If it locks when it when it's supposed to and unlocks when it's supposed to, yes as it keeps the rpms down and increases your mileage. It would be bad if it didnt unlock as you come to a stop. That actually happened to me once on one of my prior vehicles. It is kind of like coming to a stop in a vehicle with a manual transmission and not pushing the clutch in. It's not a good feeling.
A locking torque converter is one of the main reasons manual transmissions are dying a slow death. These new transmissions with smart computers can get better economy than a manual, and always be in the right gear for what you need. (Almost always )
