Help. Starts & Dies

Ok so yes I am a new member and yes this is my first post, but I need some assistance please.

2003 Expy 4.6L, roughly 118k miles.. I changed out the plugs and replaced them with E3's; now since this was my first time doing so I only managed to get 6 done yesterday before i had to go somewhere (its my DD). It ran fine that day but now i just changed out the last two and it when i went to start it it idled roughly under 2k R.p.m's and would die w/o giving it gas. I noticed one of the C.O.P.'s is slightly extended past the boot, but i changed it with a new one and no change.

Currently it now starts and just dies, and I'm not sure if missed a Vacuum line or something for it to be doing this. I'm not sure how this is suppose to be configured? Does the line coming from the shown left to there? or on the other side, if so what goen on the end of the canister?

Also the line that goes from the top or the crankcase to the back of the intake man. also seem to be slipping off if that is relevant. Sorry for long post but i need some help

That valve looks like the water flow shut-off valve used to stop water flow thru the heater core when the heater is not needed. The vacuum canister moves the little arm on the other side to open/close the valve in the hose assembly. You could plug it for testing to make sure there is no vacuum leak in the canister, but I doubt it's related to your problem.

You probably forgot to plug the connector back onto the IAC valve at the rear of the engine.

So that little canister and the lines to it are unrelated then? ok then.

Duly noted, I'll make sure to do so but the thing is I'm not sure what it is I might be missing

Would that happen to be a Hard plastic line wrapped in foamy insulation with an rubber elbow at both ends? Goes from Left of engine to behind the T.B.? If so that keeps slipping off.

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated , also if any one can link to any possible pictures(threads) that may display what my engine bay should look like(Vac. lines connected)?

Nope, that's the PCV elbow/vacuum feed. It's a common issue for the elbow at the back of the intake to get damaged and cause a large vacuum leak. Here's an image of what you're talking about: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...ml#post9460693

I was talking about the IAC valve as shown in the images in this thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...4l-triton.html

It might be as simple as the garbage E3 plugs you installed. You would not be the first person to have issues... E3s are gimmicks honestly, if you want a good plug that will last forever just use Autolites. I've used Autolites in EVERYTHING I own for as long as I've owned vehicles and never a spark plug related issue ever (except obviously when they reach the end of their lives and need replaced) Only thing to check is whether you need regular, platinum or double platinum because the idiots at Autozone/Advance/Napa/wherever are not to be trusted.

Hmm.. I dont remember ever disconnecting, or even touching, the IAC but I'll check, And thanks for the FYI about the elbow its not damaged but it keeps slipping off. If no avail I'll return with mediocre pics at best lol. Thanks all.

P.S. I tried reinstalling the old three plugs before this issue and no change so it cant be the plugs.

My vehicle is possesed...

I walk outside, poke around the engine a bit. Decide why not?

I hop in and decide to "Try" and start it you know, see what happens. It not only starts but stay running. Idles smoothly junst under/above 1k with nothing else unusual. Only thing is a hiss about 2-3 seconds after i cut it off, might just be the new belt (Hood was open).

Sounds just like a vacuum leak, doesn't it?

My 2000 does the exact same thing. I removed the entire intake system and cleaned, rechecked connections etc etc.

The truck for the most part starts better but it also will start and die if it has sat for a while.

I'm going to check that PCV elbow - where is it on the 5.4? It was damn near hidden on my 2000 Explorer lol

I never checked it yet, I'll try tonight.

But she's bad, bad enough I didn't take it to work this morning. Starts, stumbles and dies. Once I get her moving she seems to be ok. until I stop.

Turn key, starts, dies...

Checked the entire hose, there's no cracks or splits, and the 90 elbows are also intact. I cleaned them out with brake cleaner.

The PCV valve was gummed up a bit, I cleaned that with brake cleaner and its rattling around like new. (I've done this before to PCV valves and it works for the most part)

Everything is reinstalled, and she just starts and dies, starts and dies. You have to hold the pedal to keep her going and then after a while it'll idle at about 385 rpm.

I would think maybe something with the MAF since I had that all out, but I've since drivin the truck no problems after I had done that...
