I have an 89 Ford Ranger with about 300 k and auto transmission. The truck keeps revving high. Can be any day, any time the revs will suddenly spike up and stay there until I either switch it off or hit the throttle pedal a number of times. Even happens when driving, dangerous. Checked the throttle cable seems okay no springs or cable sticking. I'm stumped can you help. Thanks
My first suspicion would be the TPS (throttle position sensor) malfunctioning. One fairly easy way to confirm this would be to get the engine idling normally, then, while still idling, pull the plug off the servo motor that electronically controls the throttle via commands from the TPS. With the servo disconnected, it will never receive the signal to change the idle speed. THEN, if you still have the problem while driving over the next few days, it surely isn't the TPS. But, if the problem has suddenly disappeared, it could very well be the TPS. The good news it that it might simply need cleaned (including all connections). Don't spend any money until you clean & check everything.
