4.2l backfire problem

Hello everyone! I'm glad to be here!

I have an '07 Freestar with the 4.2 v6 in it. It has 104k miles on it. A couple of days ago I was driving with the cruise set at 70mph, I hit the accelerator to pass a slower vehicle and all the power just dropped out. I pulled over and found that the cruise cable had broken. After setting a few minutes, it started back up but it is back firing like crazy. I replaced the throttle position sensor and the coil, but it didn't help. OBTW: I hed the had the tranny worked on 2 years ago. Any thoughts? Could it be the timing belt? ......

Hey Charlie,

Welcome to FTE. I am really sorry for the delay in replying. Life has been hectic.

Hmmmmm...... interesting situation.

I would go back and make certain there is not a vacuum line loose or knocked off. I have had problems on a few occasions where the engine would put or sputter or cough after i had been under the hood working. When I checked, I found a vacuum line off.

Hope it is that simple and you find it easily.
