After removing the rear springs I realized the PO had 9 leafs in one spring and 11 in the other......
How many leafs are the original spring packs supposed to have?
Also, If I want to lower the truck should I remove every other leaf (after I remove all the extra add-a-leafs and get back to the stock number of springs). I have a 3" drop axle with stock springs in front.
These springs get old and tired. If the truck was leaning to one side because of metal fatigue, the PO may have removed some springs to level it out. Also, there could have been some heavy piece of equipment bolted to the bed. We routinely have extra springs on the passenger side of our large service trucks that have cranes mounted on the curb side. Good luck, Jag
If I were you, I'd take the leaf spring assemblies to a spring shop and have them redo the leaf springs. Tell them what you want to accomplish and they'll do it. They can disassemble them, remove every other one, reassemble and then re-arch them.
My 52 Panel was sagging in the rear ever since I bought her several years ago. I recently took the rear springs out and discovered that a few were cracked and broken. I took both assemblies to a local spring shop and they made and replaced the broken leaf springs and then re-arched them. Now my truck sits at the correct height in the rear. Cost was about $300 and only took them a few days. It was cheaper than buying new.
I already have the packs disssembled and will be doing all the work myself, luckly none of the leafs are cracked or broken (just dont have the same number on either side). I finished the front springs a while back but did not remove any leafs because I bought a 3" drop axle instead....
next question.....How many leafs were left in the pack after removing every other one to achieve a 3" drop?
