when i go to ford direct and build a truck where you pick bed length and cab style it says towing capability 12,500 whats the differnace between that and gvwr?
GVWR = Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. This is exclusive to the tow vehicle and has little bearing on how much the truck can tow. Meaning on you two axles your truck can weigh 12,500 lbs regardless of how much is behind it.
So is gcwr the same as the tow rating? And for a f 350 reg cab 6.7 with 18 wheels would it be 23.5k as I seen in the order guide?
Not quite.
GCWR is the maximum weight for your truck and trailer combination. Figure that F350 would weigh somewhere around 8,000 lbs would leave you with a 15,500 lb towing rating.
The truck and trailer along with everything in it can never exceed 23,500 lbs.
