timing issues

hey, i am having an issue with my 95 f350 460 daily driver, it caught on fire a few weeks ago for an an unknown reason, i wasn't even in it or it running. but anyway, i got a 94 f350 460 beater to get it back together. it is currently all together and running my problem is when i hit the gas it is not smooth acceleration, it like spudders up, and sometimes pops. i have the coil, distributor with a new cap rotor and wires form the 94 in it. i have a light and have the timing set to 12 btdc. i was fooling around with it the other day trying to get it to run right an had it advanced up to 30 btdc and it idled about 1200 but it accelerated nice and smooth like it did b4 it burned up. any suggestions, advice, or knowledge on the matter will be greatly apriceated. thanks.

What kind of condition is your harmonic damper. Could the outer shell possibly slipped therefore throwing off your timing marks? Also check for vaccum leaks.

my dampener is prety rusty and i can't make out the individual timing marks but i have a definate 0 mark. i have been using an advance timing light... it has a **** to dial in how far advanced you want it then you just time it to the zero mark. i have been thinking also it could be a vacuum leak, just havent had a chance to realy look over it. im definatly going to look into that though. thanks

Did you take the spout out when you set the timing ?? , sounds like your setting it with it in , 30deg BTDC , or your balancer sliped , or you have a timing chain problem ...

yea i have been warming it up and taking the spout connector out to set it. i gues the balancer marks could be off but i don't understand why it idles around 1200 rpm when i have it timed up to around 30 BTDC if that is the case. it never did that before. and i never had any issues with the timing chain before it cought on fire, i didn't think that would affect the chain..

thanks for the advise. i decided today i would start from the begining with my timing. i took all the plug wires off took the cap off, took the distributor out and turned the crank over to 0 but i cleaned my dampener for a few minutes and realized the 0 i was timing off of was actualy the 10 degree mark. so i cleaned some more and turned it to the proper 0 mark. got the distributor in put all the wires on started up ok. i let it run for a little, shut it off, took the spout out, restarted it, timed it to 12degrees BTDC and it purrd like a kitten right around 800rpm. right where its suposed to be. so i shut it off and put the spout back in then took it down the road and back and its still not smooth acleration and feels like major loss in power. so i hooked my light back up and it was still showing 12 BTDC with the spout in wich i gues is right, but i held the light on it and opend the throttle body and it didn't advance any... i always thought it should advance the timing during acceleration? is this right? what controls the computer advance for that? could it be something damaged from the fire... i am using the entire harness out of my donor truck except the computer. any advise will be greatly apriceated

The computer controls the advance , check the spout to make sure its ok , its just a jumper that unhooks it from the computer to set the base timing , there was a tread about the same thing not to long ago , don't remember the name of the tread....

hey, sorry i haven't updated. i think i've figured out whats going on. im geting no timing advance, i set it to 10 btdc w/o the spout, plug it in, no cange. turn the engine off start it back up, no change. take the spout out while it running, no change. the other day i swaped the computers with my parts truck and no change. so i was wondering what tells the computer to advance the timing?

might be 180 out? just a idea but try it out had the same problem with my 302.
take the #1 spark plug out and stuff a peice of paper or paper towel in it and turn the motor over (with igntion) til it blows out then stop turning it over ASAP! (eiser if you have a buddy turning the motor over while you watch) then set your balancer to whatever it should be set at im not 100% sure what it is on a 460 (you said your's is rusted take some oil and rub it on there and use some kind of scrubber til you find your numbers) after you find your numbers spin the balacner to whatever number it should be at then take your cap off and where ever your rotor is pointing start there with your firing order and then do the timing light after to set it. The motor has to be up to temp before you can set the timing and get it close to being on ( not sure if you knew that) you can either advance or retard it from there.
let us know.
