300 I6 question

I have a 300 I6 EFI/5 spd in my 90 Bronco. I lost my rear cat going through a cow pasture. It broke all the way up to the rear of the front cat and ripping some of it off a little.

I have my check engine light coming on.

Anyways, I wonder if it will be ok to just cut off the cat I have now?

I've heard it will increase MPGs and won't hurt this year model since it isn't equipped with the OBI II or whatever.

Yeah, yeah, I know about pollution and we're still polluting the environment with the left over gases out of our exhaust. We can't stop it unless we just stop driving vehicles with gas/diesel engines.

I don't have to worry about pollution deal in my area usually since we are mostly forested covered land not like the metropolitian area of Atlanta; where they cut every single tree standing.

I'm thinking about taking to whole smog crap off but people say it helps gas mileage and then others says it hurts it. Makes you wonder who to believe.

I was wondering if anyone who has a 300 I6 notice any difference with their cats cut off?

You cannot arbitrarily remove emissions equipment from EEC-IV equipped engines. It simply will not run right. And it does not matter what engine we are talking about. The emissions sensors and peripheral equipment is too well integrated into the normal functions of the computer to just randomly start yanking stuff out. Oh and you might find this thread interesting reading.

Catalytic converters are completely passive devices. if anyone has gained mileage or performance by removing one it is because it was clogged or partially clogged before they removed it. With that said however, depending upon where you are located, you may not be required to keep the catalytic converter if it is damaged or clogged. I say 'depending upon where you live" because some states, (like here in Missouri) do not require emissions testing on any vehicle that is not OBD-II equipped... so 95 and earlier. Federal law dictates that no FUNCTIONING catalytic converter may be removed from ANY vehicle regardless of age.

As to the CEL, you need to pull codes to be certain what the issue is that is causing it to come on. There is no other way to know why it is coming on and no way to be certain you are actually correcting the problem without pulling codes.
