Painted grill shell?

My grill shell is beat up pretty bad, and I can't seem to find any in good condition at the JY's - has anyone painted theirs the same color as the truck? (the metal part not the plastic part) and have any pics? Having a hard time picturing it any color but what it comes as since that's all I've seen.

The new ones are just too expensive for a piece of aluminum.

I have not painted or seen one painted. But living here in Oklahoma I've seen lots of these trucks in JY'ds around NE OK. You might have to drive a little ways from where you're at to find a good used shell. It wouldn't hurt to post a wanted ad in craigslist too.

Just my luck, I lived in tulsa less than a year ago, and now I live at the opposite end of the state lol.

I guess I'll keep looking and just keep the crappy shell for now. Either that or paint it just to see what it looks like, if it's horrible that'll be more motivation to find a suitable replacement, lol.

If I do decide to paint it, I'll be sure to post pics so everyone else can see how horrible it looks, too :P

Hey guys. Im in OKC (Moore actually) I have found a few of these trucks in JY's but the shell is almost always trash. Most vehicles in the yards have had a front end collision.

I am actually in the process of de-anodizing and polishing a replacement for mine. It has a couple of dings, but for $50 it looks great. I actually found it on Craigslist from a guy in Muskogee. He was advertising engine parts and transmissions and just mentioned that he had some random parts. He just happened to have a good shell. I bought a bunch of stuff to justify the trip.

To answer your question, yes, people do paint them. Search on here a bit and you will see a few. I dont care much for the look overall, but it works on some trucks. The OP on the thread I linked below has a black on camo scheme that looks good IMO. You might ask him about his prep and such. He seems to enjoy sharing his tricks.

Problem with trying to restore mine is it has gouges out of it where the metal has been burred.

I actually kind of like that. I was thinking of doing the exact same thing with my inserts. Problem is, I haven't decided on what color I'm painting the truck. It's the hardest decision of them all :P

Yes, Im hoping to paint mine within a month and Im still second guessing the color.

As to your gouges. If you are painting anyways you can probably just hammer them out as much as possible and use some kind of filler.

Seen em done that way, and personnaly I don't like em. But to each their own. That was a pretty common thing to do in the '80s when the monochromatic look was the "big thing". They'd paint the shell, inserts and bumpers all the same color as the body. I never liked the look..............

That's what I was thinking - if I'm going to paint them I could just to do 'body work' to it and fix the issue, and problem solved.

My current choice of color is SVT Blue, but it changes from day to day.

Yep. That's me... Good design doesn't have to cost alot... It just takes alot of head scratching.

As to the gouges, use a fine flat file to debur the surrounding metal. Stop-drill any cracks to prevent the tear from getting any bigger.

Painting the shell.. wet sand thoroughly with 320, prime, and shoot yer color in multiple wet coats. Enjoy.
