Hey Guys, I have a '99 F-250 PSD with AFE Intake, 4" MBRP Turbo Back Exhaust, DP Tuner (amazing!) with 4.5" of lift and 37" hummer tires. My question is someone recently pointed out a high pitch noise coming from my truck. He believed it was the spool bearing. I have had the truck 4 years and did all the work my self, just unsure if the spool bearing is going out. The truck has sounded the same from the day I bought it. Is there any way to identify if it is the turbo bearing or any other? The truck runs great and strong, but I admit I always thought it had a background noise that I havent heard before.
If your truck is running good with no problems, then this is normal. You will hear the turbo more with the open intake and larger exhaust. When you put a chip like the DP-TUNER, the turbo is spooling more so I think that is what you are hearing. What kind of boost are you seeing at WOT?. The stock turbo does not have bearings, it has journals. (spelling)?
EDIT: If you have an early '99, you will have the Wicked Wheel on it and it makes more noise then the '99.5.
Its a late 99. And I figured if I have no problems and no lag from the turbo then Ill just roll with it. It just put a concern in my head, now its something that I notice more since someone had to mention it. . . But thank you for your help.
Just want to say that the 99's have a lot of turbo whine compared to latter models. If it just that not an unusual noise it is normal. ford engineered out the turbo whine for customer comfort on later models. if you ride in a later model truck you will probably not here this. if it not normal turbo whine a little investigation is in order. Just a thought.
