I'm looking for any info on adapting a shaker assembly to my 84 Bronco 351W. I know some of the early 70's Mustangs and Torinos were equipped with this, and even some that had a 351C. I think it's possible, but need to know where to get the parts, and if anyone can provide their expertise. Thanks, Randy
Check with some of the Mustang aftermarket supply houses. If you try to find an actual shaker intake you are going to pay an arm, a leg, and possibly a ******** for a OEM setup. The repo's are way cheaper. the best bit of advice I can give though it to know what kind of hood clearance you have. Place a lump of play-dough on the top of the aircleaner housing and close the hood. Pop open the hood and measure the thickness, add more if you don't have an impression. Then call around for one. That way you aren't disappointed when you get one and you find out you will have to make a spacer for it. FYI.
I'm pretty certain that a spacer would be needed, since it's about 10 inches from the top of the carb to the hood. What I am unsure of is the fit, due to the fact that the carb sits so far back in the engine compartment--only 4 inches from the carb center to the cowl/firewall. I don't know if the mustangs are this way, too, or if the carb is further forward on the engine? I did find a repop shaker assembly at Mustang Depot for $365.00. That's chicken feed, IMO, since this setup would be priceless if I can make it work! Randy
I have thought about adapting a shaker to my truck as well. I have one that goes on my cobrajet mustang but have not taken any measurements. I do know that there are some differences among the shakers depending on the engine size. The 428 shaker is shorter in height than the shaker on a 351c for example due to the taller 428.
If you have the stock intake manifold, then you would need a very tall spacer. I am running a Weiand Stealth manifold which is much taller than the factory intake plus a 1/2" phenolic spacer. I have about 2 inches of clearance between the top of my filter housing to the bottom of my hood. I need to measure the shaker some time to determine how much of the shaker sticks up above the top of the filter housing. With a Cleveland shaker, it might just work without a big spacer.
I never thought about distance from the firewall to the shaker. That may be a problem as well.
Thanks a million for the reply! I really need the info from someone that has a mustang/torino with a shaker, to find out the height measurements and if the scoop is centered onto the shaker midplate like in the ad I found at Mustang Depot. I am running an Edelbrock Performer intake that is basically a stock replacement, and the OEM Holley carb. I'll put a pic of my engine in my gallery to show how hard it is to raise the carb anymore than it is now, Randy
Thanks for that link, fordtruckin!!! They had a good drawing of the various parts in the assembly, although the parts they have for sale are all N.O.S., and I don't want to spend $2000 on this setup!!! I sent them an e-mail for info anyway, to see if they think I'm crazy or not, Randy
because of the added hood clearance you will have to get a modded air cleaner base and a spacer for your intake.....
the Torino had the tallest shaker base....
there is a cheaper way to put together a shaker setup....
there is a guy that reproduces the shaker scoops in aluminum now....
he's out of Australia....Dennis Mcquade fo a google search
they also sell the intermediate flapper plates....
and the same guy producing the fiberglass shakers can sell you a shaker base conversion ring.....so all you have to do is get a tall air cleaner base from ford and weld the conversion ring on top...
shaker seals sell for about $80.....with the drain tube....
vacuum motors go for $120-130 new.
flappers go for $100 with the rod.
inner lids...the fiberglass shaker guy sells the metal repros...$80
consider getting an RPM air gap intake for added height.....
I own an original 428 cj shaker and these go for lots of money.....
it is in a 69 cj coupe
I truly appreciate that response and the info!!! One source I checked with said they should have a Torino-style shaker assembly available this Summer. It sounds like that is the type I will need to get the most height. I'm in the process of ordering some of these parts, to get a better idea of the fit in the Bronco. I also found a place to get a stock fiberglass hood that I can cut a hole in. The stock metal hood has too much bracing in the way of where the scoop would go. I also noticed that the carb is off-center about 2 inches to the passngr-side, so I will need to center the top portion somehow. Any pictures or further links are welcome, Randy
A little snag in my search for Dennis McQuade. Nothing in aussieland on him, but I did come across FoMoCo.AU and e-mailed them about their shaker stuff. Is this guy with Ford, or is he an independent???
G'day Randy, thanks for the info on the 9" rear end. Will look into it.
What would you like to know about the "shakers" over here?
They came out on the 1971 XY Falcon GTHO (still regarded as one of the best mussle cars around). They are easy to find/buy, always people selling/installing them on mock-up GT's.
My neighbour has one on his XY wagon, so if you need some info I can get it for you.
I haven't heard of Denis McQuade, shakers are easy to get, origional genuine ones harder, but new ones easy.
You can Email me at: Bronc@bigpond.com
PS: Good to see you came over here and enjoyed it. What sort of work were you doing at Moree?
We do like our V8's over here.
There aint no substitute for cubes!
Dazza, if you know of any links to sites that have the shaker components for sale, that would be helpful. I really don't need N.O.S. or factory parts, and repop's are much cheaper. If you could get a few measurements from the one near you, that would help me, too. I'll e-mail you with more details on what I need.
I did agronomy work for one of the big farms over there (Colly). I hope to get back there this year or next. It's alot like South Texas here in the States, Randy
I found a complete Torino-style shaker assembly at FoMoCo.com.us (fordramair.com), just getting a little more info on it. Does anyone know where I can get a short carb spacer or velocity stack to mount on top of the carb and uder the filter base?
