Question where's the block ID#?

Let me apologise first, I know this is probably an oft asked question, but I couldn't find it addressed under a "block id" etc search.

I run a "82 Bronco with a 300-6. Last year I bought an '84 Bronco XLT from a tow truck driver/buddy for parts (already tripled my return). 'Story was the engine had sucked a valve and the owner had finally given up on it. I recharged the battery and to my surprise it started and ran - roughly - like it had a fouled plug - not a sucked valve ( I think I know the difference).

The engine is (supposed to be) a 351. I would like to determine which 351 it is (W,M,C, - IF it is). Where do I find the block ID #? ...will get back with the results. Thanks for you patience.

where's the block ID#?

why don't we start with some easy ways to tell what it is? how many valve cover hold down bolts? what type of spark plugs, peanut plugs(pinkie size threads) or the big W plugs(thumb size threads)? where is the thermostat? sticking out the front of the intake manifold, or sticking up out of the top of the block? how wide is the top of the intake manifold where it touches the heads?

well the casing numbers are on the side of the block upside down. here are a few tips to help you id the engine.

<a href="http://motorhaven.autoanything.com/">351c </a>was made from 1970-1974 - so its not one of these

351M/400 was made from 1975/1971 to 1982 - so its not one if these.

both of these are the same engine family and have 8 bolts on the valve cover, and no t-stat housing on the intake. its on the block

<a href="http://motorhaven.autoanything.com/">351w </a>was made from 1969-1996 - its probably this. they have 6 bolts on valve covers and have t-stat housing on intake.

Smile where's the block ID#?

I knew if I looked long enough I would find the info I was looking for here at the FTE site. Bubbaf250 clears it up in his (2-14-01) post "<a href="http://motorhaven.autoanything.com/"><a href="http://motorhaven.autoanything.com/">351m </a></a>or C". I
found it using a "engine AND identification" search...

I will try those suggested methods as soon as the snow drift it's burried in melts a little more so I can get to it.
